The Three Lions have not managed to win any silverware for quite a while now but they have one of the best squads in the world, worthy of winning on the biggest stage. The World Cup in Russia is coming ever so close and the teams around the world are already preparing for the next set of qualifiers.
The international break, that frustrates most club fans, is back again but this time, there are a number of top-class encounters to keep the fans busy. Gareth Southgate’s England play Slovenia and Lithuania in the space of three days and there are a number of issues in the squad that need to be solved.
The manager has a number of options in a strong squad to pick his starting XI from and if that was not enough of a headache, the boss should now decide as to who deserves to wear the armband for his side in the upcoming World Cup.
England have been captained by Gary Cahill, Joe Hart, Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane on a rotational basis, after the retirement of Wayne Rooney. This rotation of captains isn’t going to help the team as a leader is someone who would set the tone for the performances.
So now the question arises as to who should take over as the captain of the England National Team. Undoubtedly, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is right up there in the list of players who deserve to take over the captain’s armband.
Currently captaining the side in the absence of Cahill, Kane should be the skipper of the side in the upcoming games, with Southgate not expected to start Cahill regularly.
Joe Hart and Eric Dier were other names suggested alongside Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson but reports now suggest that Spurs’ goal-scoring machine wants to take up the responsibility on a permanent basis. With astonishing figures to his name already this season, the Golden Boot winner in England in the last couple of seasons, Kane is right up there with the best in the business, not just in England but also in Europe.
His technical ability and desire to score and win games make him one of the best players in the squad for the Three Lions, if not the best at the moment. He is full of energy and has the ability to lead his side from the front, and his aggressive nature on the pitch might just be what England needs to start winning trophies.
The other contenders for the role are surely good candidates but Southgate has hardly stuck by the book and would surely be interested in making Kane the next English captain. Afterall, he deserves it more than anybody else!
