Can Alexis Sanchez finally revive his Manchester United career?

Alexis Sanchez scored the crucial winner in Manchester United’s 3-2 comeback victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the Premier League. Truth to be told, Sanchez didn’t make much of an impact after coming on as a substitute but he was at the right place at the right time to head home Ashley Young’s cross from the right to complete United’s comeback against Newcastle.

Sanchez, 29, has endured a miserable time at Old Trafford since moving from Arsenal in January. Manchester United thought they were signing the Chilean at the peak of his powers when he left the Gunners. So far, though, Jose Mourinho has failed to coax the best from Sanchez and for all the diminutive attacker’s brilliance, he has looked a pale shadow of his former self.

Sanchez was brought in to boost United’s attack and provide a different dimension. The club’s decision to hand him the iconic no.7 jersey also suggested that Sanchez was primed to become the team’s talismanic figure. That has not happened, however, as the player has managed just four goals, which include the winner against Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle last weekend.

Much of Sanchez’s struggles at United are down to Mourinho’s defensive functional system. However, one just cannot ignore the fact that the player has disappointed himself and the fans with his one-dimensional approach.

But there is an opportunity for Sanchez to turn the tables around and spark his United career after scoring the winner at Old Trafford. He could use that goal as a springboard for reviving his career under Mourinho.

Sanchez, who currently earns a staggering £505,000-a-week, needs to up his game pronto. The Chilean’s return to form could help him ease Romelu Lukaku’s goalscoring responsibilities, especially since the Belgian looks tired and short of confidence in front of the goal at the moment.

Lukaku has been the United’s chief source for goals and the big Belgian’s dip in form has directly affected the team’s morale as Mourinho’s men have failed to find the back of the net with ease.

With crunch games against Chelsea and Juventus to follow after the international break, the time is ripe for Sanchez to regain his mojo and silence his critics. The Chilean remains Mourinho’s most potent weapon and is capable of doing damage to any opposition in the blink of an eye.
