The Next Lampard? 3 Reasons Why This English Kid To Chelsea Makes Sense

Share

Part of the new generation of British talents coming through, Ross Barkley has stamped his name across English football in little less than a year’s time. Born in the Wavertree area of Liverpool, a region with the long lasting Beatles legacy, Barkley has come up leaps and bound through the ranks at Everton. Born and bred an Evertonian, Barkley has caught the eye of many a big club with his impressive displays on the pitch. He could be said as one of the big reasons for Everton’s brilliant season so far. They are hot on the heels of fourth placed Arsenal, thanks in no small part to the excellence of Barkley.

As it stands, Everton aren’t the biggest of clubs in England, and vultures have been circulating around Barkley ever since he came to the fore. His imposing physique goes along well with his exciting brand of football, and as far as reports in the media go, he might well be subject of a Chelsea bid in the summer. He won’t come cheap though, having been an England international of late. But you can never rule out anything when Chelsea are concerned, and Jose Mourinho could pull off a coup if he manages to bring him to the Bridge. Here are three thoughts as to why Barkley to Chelsea makes sense.

Frank Lampard has his days numbered

As much as he has contributed to Chelsea’s cause for over a decade, it is somewhat bittersweet that Lampard’s days at the very top of the English game seems to be all but over. He hasn’t got the legs anymore, and his goalscoring acumen seems to be on a negative spiral. Lampard is currently on a rolling one year contract and is on big wages. Jose Mourinho could definitely put a full stop to the legendary Frank’s career at Chelsea; after all he seldom hesitates in pulling plugs. Barkley could be an apt replacement for Chelsea’s record goalscorer, but would the weight of expectations bog the youngster down is the big question.

Chelsea have far deeper pockets

As with clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United whose advances could stall over little money, Chelsea needn’t worry as they have deeper pockets to go and get their man. Jose Mourinho has proved time and time again that he could go the distance in negotiating prices, and it seems like the only plausible destination for Barkley would be Chelsea. Homegrown players come with a default premium, and that could be enough to put off Barkley’s many suitors. Whether Chelsea are willing to defy Financial Fair Play and go ahead with their target is a question on many people’s lips, but you could bet on this going on for far longer than anticipated. After all Everton aren’t the nicest of negotiators.

It could be a win-win for Ross

A move to Chelsea would be a perfect opportunity for Barkley to launch himself into relative greatness. Who would have imagined Lampard going on to greatness had he stayed on at West Ham? At Chelsea, Champions League football comes around every season, and he could be vying for honors every season. And the thing about big clubs is that you don’t have to be the main guy to garner attention from the national team setup. England managers often select their roster from the big clubs, and at Chelsea, Barkley could go on to be a fixture in the England national team. Both ways, it’s a win-win for Barkley. His sale would be compensated adequately to his hometown club Everton and a move would be a springboard to greatness for the Liverpudlian.
