Benteke or Vardy? Who’d Be A Better January Buy For Chelsea?

Alvaro Morata’s injury definitely came at the wrong time for Chelsea, as he’d made a brilliant start to his Blues career. The Spanish striker notched up 7 goals in 9 appearances before pulling his hamstring in the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City last month.

Antonio Conte has already pointed out the lack of depth in the Blues squad and was desperate to bring in some reinforcements before the end of the summer transfer window. The Italian manager was eyeing former Juventus and Swansea striker Fernando Llorente but the veteran striker eventually ended up at Tottenham on the final day of the window.

Conte understands the pressure of being the reigning Premier League champions but is desperately short in the striking department with Michy Batshuayi also failing step up in the absence of Morata. The Belgian striker hasn’t been as effective in the Premier League this season and though he was brilliant against Watford yesterday, it is not sure if he can put in such performances on a consistent basis.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool FC striker Christian Benteke and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the the upcoming January transfer window. So let’s take a look which of these two would be a better fit under Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

Jamie Vardy

It’s been an incredible journey for the 30-year-old, from playing in the lower leagues to winning the Premier League title with Leicester City. Vardy will definitely fit the bill at Chelsea having played more than a decade of football in England. He’s got pace, power and accuracy and has enough quality to walk straight into Antonio Conte’s first team.

Vardy is also left frustrated with his decision not to join Arsenal in the 2016 summer transfer window after a full season so far with the Foxes. The Blues definitely need an experienced striker and having missed out on Fernando Llorente, Antonio Conte should be happy to bring in Jamie Vardy.

Christian Benteke

The last big club Christian Benteke moved to was Liverpool FC in 2015, and we all know how that went. The 26-year-old was offloaded after just one season with the Reds. However, the Belgian striker had a decent campaign last season for the Eagles, with 17 goals and 2 assists in 40 appearances.

Benteke is certainly a talented striker but it is a whole different scenario when it comes to playing for a side like Chelsea. Benteke is known for his strength and hold-up play but lacks pace, which is essential for the Blues. Conte will want a striker who can offer the side plenty of pace on the counter, like Vardy, as Morata already offers what Benteke can.

Verdict

Jamie Vardy is the clear choice between the two and is the player who Chelsea should look to sign in the upcoming January window.
