Swansea City’s biggest mistake in the 2017/18 season was not replacing Gylfi Sigurdsson properly. Instead, they added depth in the wrong areas and tried to use Leroy Fer to help ease the transition. They added Renato Sanches, Andy King and even Sam Clucas but nothing helped.
The club ultimately failed to make the mark, finishing in 18th place. This saw them get relegated and demoted to the Championship, where the club has continued their form.
The club lack midfielders in key areas and that is something that they will not survive without. It’s something that the club will definitely not be able to handle despite the best efforts Bersant Celina and Yan Dhanda’s presence.
Instead, they need to start looking towards adding reinforcements and a new manager. The Swans have also lost manager Graham Porter to Brighton and Hove Albion. The Seagulls had sacked manager Chris Hughton at the end of the season and appointed Porter to replace him.
That leaves the club without a manager and while their first job will be to replace their former boss, they also need a replacement for Fer. More than a few players fit that bill.
But one man who would be perfect for the club is Ruben Lameiras, with the Plymouth Herald reporting that Swansea are interested.
The 24-year-old has done well for Plymouth Argyle with him joining the club in the summer of 2017. Since then he’s made 82 appearances for the club, contributing to just under 40 goals. However, a large chunk of that has come this season with him flourishing for the League one side.
A very versatile player, the 24-year-old has played all across the midfield over the course of his career.
He’s also had cameo’s at centre-forward and as a central midfielder but he does do his best work further forward. An attacking midfielder by trade, the 24-year-old has flourished when used as a number 10.
It’s where his combination of pace and agility really flourishes for the club, doing exceptionally well. That’s what has happened this season and with Fer leaving, it does leave a spot open at Swansea City.

Swansea City need a more creative edge to their game and that’s exactly what someone like Ruben Lameiras can provide. Add to that their lack of midfielders for the future and the 24-year-old does get a chance to slot right into the first-team.
