[Surprising Stats] Flamini Wins The Battle Against Arteta: Arsenal Midfielder Has Been A Success Story This Season

Share

Arsenal’s midfield has been superb this season, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and even Jack Wilshere grabbing the headlines on a regular basis. However, two players who have largely slipped under the radar have been Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini, who work their socks off and do the dirty work while others take the credit.

However, with both players playing roughly the same amount of games, who has had the better season so far? Here we take a look at some numbers to help us decide.

Passing

Arteta has played 1535 minutes of football in his 21 appearances compared to 1155 minutes that Flamini has played in his 19 appearances. In that time, Arteta has attempted 1330 passes, i.e. a pass every 69 seconds, of which an incredible 92% have found their target. Flamini, on the other hand, has attempted 809 passes, or a pass every 86 seconds, but has been more accurate with 93% of them reaching their intended recipient.

In terms of creating chances from their deep lying role, Arteta has created 13 chances compared to Flamini’s 6. While both of them don’t have the best of numbers when it comes to creating chances, Arteta’s numbers are much better due to the fact that he takes set pieces for the Gunners.

Defensive Output

This is one of the key areas in terms of evaluating the performances of the two players considering the roles that they play for Arsenal, and Flamini outperforms Arteta in this regard quite comprehensively.

Arteta has managed 40 interceptions, 2 blocks and 40 clearances in his 21 appearances, or simply put, he performs a defensive action every 19.3 minutes on the pitch. Compared to that, Flamini has managed 29 interceptions, 9 blocks and 45 clearances in his 19 appearances, i.e. he performs a defensive action every 13.9 minutes on the pitch.

While Arteta has been a part of more duels, his overall success rate is much lower than that of Flamini. Arteta has won 44% of 112 attempted tackles and 44% of 55 headed duels. Flamini on the other hand has won 46% of his 46 attempted tackles and 65% of his 26 headed duels. Flamini (2) has also committed less defensive errors than Arteta (4).

Other Factors

In terms of discipline, Arteta and Flamini have both been sent off once- Arteta was sent off against Crystal Palace in October while Flamini was sent off against Southampton in January. However, Arteta (2) has collected less yellow cards than Flamini (4).

Arteta has scored two goals, both from the penalty spot- one against Crystal Palace in the 2-0 win and the other in the 5-1 thrashing at Liverpool- while Flamini has scored a solitary goal which came from open play in the 3-0 win against Cardiff.

The Verdict

The roles the two players play, although comparable, are not the same. So pitting them directly against one another seems unfair to the both of them as both bring their unique skillsets to the table. However, based on the numbers, Flamini seems to have outperformed Arteta so far this season.
