Super-Sub Austin, Brilliant Yoshida – The best and the worst rated Southampton stars vs Brighton

Share

Full time: Brighton 0-1 Southampton

Southampton go through to the third round of the League Cup by narrowly beating Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 away at the Amex Stadium. A late Charlie Austin header won Mark Hughes’ men the game.

It was a game of few clear cut chances and the feeling was that one goal would be enough to get a win in the Sussex coast. Saints got that goal in the 88th minute from super-sub Austin to send the away fans to delirious raptures.

Southampton Player Ratings

Angus Gunn (7/10)

Produced a fine save to deny Gyokeres in the second half. Apart from that, it was a comfortable game for the former Manchester City man.

Jack Stephens (6/10)

He was controlled and composed at right-back. Played some good balls down the channel and remained defensively secure.

Maya Yoshida (7/10)

Dominated the opposition centre-forward and imposed his authority throughout the game.

Jan Bednarek (6.5/10)

Partnered Yoshida well and did his job. Got booked in the second half.

Matt Targett (7/10)

Was involved in the goal and put in some delicious crosses all game. Was defensively good too.

Oriol Romeu

Oriol Romeu (7/10)

Held the ball well in the midfield and played some neat passes through the lines. A controlled display.

James Ward-Prowse (6.5/10)

Ticked the attack over without really sparking. However, the performance was decent overall.

Steven davis

Steven Davis (6/10)

A hard-working performance from the midfielder, who could have made use of the ball a bit more judiciously.

Mohamed Elyounoussi (7.5/10)

Always looked dangerous carrying the ball forward. He was defended well at times but showed his worth.

Stuart Armstrong (6.5/10)

A decent performance from the 26-year-old, who almost scored with a lovely effort which fizzed past the post.

Manolo Gabbiadini (5/10)

Crosses were fed to him but the Albion keeper was more or less in command of many of them. Couldn’t really impact the game.

Substitutes

Nathan Redmond (Subbed on after 81 mins) (7.5/10)

Provided the spark from the bench and assisted the only goal of the game very late on.

Charlie Austin

Charlie Austin (Subbed on after 81 mins) (8/10)

A super-sub, who scored the goal which ultimately won the game.
