Preston North End produced the first of probably many shocks of the League Cup this year as they beat Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United 2-0 away at the Elland Road. To add significance, the away side were down to ten men after 29 minutes, but still managed to keep a clean sheet and get the win.
Daniel Johnson scored a penalty in the second minute to give his team a perfect start. Ryan Ledson then made a silly two-footed challenge on Lewis Baker. However, they kept playing football and scored another via Brandon Barker in the injury time of the first half.
Made several good saves to keep his clean sheet intact against a very good team. A good performance.
A controlled display from the right-back, who did well defensively, especially in the second half when the team was down to ten men.
Was commanding at the back and never allowed Leeds strikers to have an easy time on the ball.
He formed a good partnership with Shorey to thwart the opposition. A good performance from the skipper in general.
A solid display from the left-back, which got better in the second half when Leeds were looking to score and Preston were down by a man.
A lively performance from the winger, who could have almost doubled the lead for Preston straight after the first goal.
Scored a good penalty and controlled the midfield, especially after half-time when they were a man down.
A bad two-footed 50-50 challenge which deservedly got him the red card. He let his team down just half an hour into the game.
Scored a wonderful goal at the stroke of half-time to double the lead. The Manchester City loanee did look good in spells.
Won the penalty early on and harried the Leeds defence by pressing high. He almost robbed the ball off Jamal Blackman to turn it in. A lively performance from the striker.
Was quiet when compared to his strike partner but put in a good shift for the team.
Was brought on to provide fresh energy in defence, which was getting tested with a man down.
Was given the last 20 minutes to shore up the defence and get his team over the line. Did well.
