According to a report in Scotsman, Scottish club Rangers will renew their interest in signing ex-Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel. The report claims that Gers manager Steven Gerrard, who was the Slovakian’s teammate at Anfield, hasn’t given up on the chance to bring the defender to the Ibrox.
This is despite the player’s wages downing the hopes of a deal next summer. Skrtel was designated to join Rangers even before Gerrard was unveiled as the manager, however, the Fenerbahce defender’s agent claimed that the finances were apart because of the 33-year-old’s wage demands. (Scotsman)
The Slovakian’s deal with the Turkish is set to run out at the end of the season, and the Gers can begin the talks in January.

Even though Rangers bolstered their centre-back department by signing Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson from Slaven Belupon and Brighton respectively along with Joe Worrall on a loan deal and veteran Gareth McAuley as a free agent, they probably need someone with experience of the highest order.
McAuley has been in and around the top-flight game for more than a while now, however, at the age of 38, one can’t expect him to play many games.
Both Katic (22) and Goldson (25) are in their early 20s, which is still a relatively young age for a centre-back. Worrall is here on a season-long loan deal and would go back once the season ends.
Hence, it makes sense for Rangers to buy one experienced centre-back who can play games on a regular basis and guide the young ship as much as he can.
Gerrard’s men have shown defensive frailties in a few games this season, especially the one against Spartak Moscow.
If they get Skrtel, they will inherit a player who has played in big stadiums, in hostile atmospheres and also in big tournaments. Therefore, if Rangers need a stable figure at the back for the league and also for the European games, the Slovakian is the ideal choice.
