Why Celtic should sign Connor Roberts from Swansea City

According to a report in the Express, Scottish champions and current league leaders Celtic are currently scouting Swansea City right-back Connor Roberts. The 23-year-old is now a regular in the Wales national team and has impressed in the Championship this season. However, his deal with the Swans runs out at the end of this season, and he may leave for nothing.

The Hoops are looking to add a right-back to their squad in order to increase competition in that position for Mikael Lustig, consequently reducing some pressure on the Swedish international (h/t Express).

There are also suggestions (h/t Daily Record) that the 31-year-old is wanted by Swede club AIK in a Bosman deal.

Hence, in any case, Celtic must buy a new right-back sooner than later. And getting Roberts could be ideal for the club. Here’s why:

Roberts’ quality would shine

Predominantly a right-back, Connor Roberts can operate as a right-sided midfielder and also as a right winger when needed.

This means that he is a manager’s delight, as the 23-year-old can change positions effectively. The modern-day game is partly about players being flexible, and the Welshman fits that bill perfectly.

He has had a terrific season thus far, and it’s not surprising to see that he is playing for Ryan Giggs’ Wales on a regular basis. The right-back has played each of the 17 games in the league this season, has scored two goals and supplied key passes at the rate of 1.2.

This indicates that he has created 20 chances for the team. He possesses a pass success rate of 82.7%, which is phenomenal for a right-back/right winger.

Roberts is an excellent player off the ball as well, working hard to produce tackles and interceptions. He has made them at an average of 2.1 and 1.1 per game respectively, epitomising his all-around capabilities as a full-back.

Celtic have been scouting the 23-year-old and truth be told, they are doing the right thing. In order add competition to the right-back slot, or to possibly replace Lustig, Roberts would be an ideal player for the Hoops.

Not only will the Welshman provide quality and consistency, but also the flexibility of playing different positions on the right-hand side, which is always good for a manager.

From the player’s perspective, his contract with Swansea runs out at the end of this season. Therefore, this is a great chance for him to move on to pastures new.
