The transfer market isn’t officially open but that does not mean that clubs cannot sign players and Manchester United have made one big move already this season. They confirmed the signing of Memphis Depay, subject to a medical. Depay is the hottest property right now in Dutch football and the PSV attacker would be linking up with fellow Dutch mates Daley Blind and manager Louis Van Gaal next season, as long as the medical turns up alright.
While Depay has been scoring freely in the Eredivisie, that isn’t the toughest league in the World and that means he would have to step up to shine in the Premier League, he does have the ability to do that but would need some sound guidance to achieve that. We still need to gauge and understand where he stands and hence we compare him to a player who has similar stats this season. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t played as many games as Depay, but still has had a decent season, we compare the players using Squawka stats, to ensure a proper comparison, we will only compare average per game stats for both players.
England vs. Holland
The most telling stat when comparing the players is the one regarding shots on goal, while Oxlade-Chamberlain might be playing for an attacking Arsenal team, he only averages 1.41 shots per game while Depay averages a whopping 5.50 shots per game. This translates really well into goals scored with Depay clearly ahead with 0.75 goals scored per game (which is a really good number) compared to just 0.05 goals scored per game by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
When it comes to passing the ball about, Oxlade-Chamberlain just shades Depay by having 25.64 successful passes per game compared to 23.46 successful passes per game for the Dutchman. This doesn’t mean that Depay isn’t deadly with his passing. Depay averages 1.86 key passes per game while Oxlade-Chamberlain only averages 1.55 key passes per game.
In the assist column, it is Depay who steers ahead of Alex with 0.14 assists per game while the English attacker only has 0.05 assists per game. The Dutch player just about shades the chances created stat with 2 chances per game compared to 1.59 chances per game for the Ox. The only stat the Ox rules over Depay is the successful take-ons with Alex having 3.77 successful take-ons per game compared to just 2.75 for Depay.
Either way, Depay is surely going to be a big star in the Premier League if things go right for him, he just has to ensure he applies his gifts properly and isn’t carried away by the glitz and glamour of the Premier League.
