Comparing Dayot Upamecano with Manchester United Defenders

Manchester United are reportedly considering a January move for teen sensation Dayot Upamecano, who plays as a central-defender for RB Leipzig. The 19-year-old is one of the most sought-after young players in the world, and rightfully so. The defender is best known for his part in France winning the U-17 World Cup back in 2015.

He was only 16 when he joined RB Salzburg and he managed to make an impact, following which he joined RB Leipzig after making 23 appearances for his former club. While Upamecano does show tremendous potential, he is still quite raw, and he needs to be nurtured further for him to grow into a top player.

While Dayot Upamecano only joined RB Leipzig in January and has been at the club for less than a year, he’s shown signs of becoming a brilliant defender in the future. But does he have a future at Manchester United?

Let’s compare his stats with United’s top centre-backs.

Dayot Upamecano vs Phil Jones

In 11 appearances for RB Leipzig so far, Upamecano has played for 990 minutes while picking up one yellow card. He has an average of 0.1 shots per game, while enjoying a pass success of 84.4%. He is extremely strong in the air, having won about 3 aerial duels per game, according to stats from WhoScored.

Jones, on the other hand, has appeared 10 times for Manchester United, and has spent 833 minutes on the field. He hasn’t received any bookings, and he too enjoys an average of 0.1 shots per game. His pass success is at 92.3%, while having won a decent 2.3 aerial battles per game.

Dayot Upamecano vs Eric Bailly

In 8 appearances for United thus far, Bailly has played for about 720 minutes. He has also scored a goal in the process, while picking up 2 yellow cards. He averages 0.4 shots per game and has a pass success of 85.7%. The player is aerially weak, having won only 1.3 aerial duels on an average.

Dayot Upamecano vs Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling has appeared 7 times for United in the new season, which has seen him clock 646 minutes on the field. He has picked up one yellow card while averaging 0.6 shots per game. He has a pass success of 89.3% and he has managed to win 3.9 aerial battles, which is quite impressive.

Verdict:

His numbers speak volumes about Upamecano and is already on par – if not better – with three of United’s most frequently-played centre-backs. Jones’ skills on the ground coupled with Upamecano’s aerial prowess would certainly be a treat, making the youngster a good fit for the Old Trafford outfit.
