According to the Express, Tottenham are involved in a three-way tussle to sign Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez. The report suggests that fellow Premier League club West Ham and Catalan giants Barcelona are also keen on signing the Uruguayan in the summer.
Tottenham’s need for a backup forward has been overly evident in the past few weeks after Fernando Llorente failed to impress during Harry Kane’s absence. Vincent Janssen is also out of favour at the club, which only leaves Son Hueng-min as a makeshift forward if Kane ever gets injured again.
Spurs have been in the news with links to Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge among others but a move for Maxi Gomez in the summer makes a lot more sense and would be a fine fit under Mauricio Pochettino.
Maxi Gomez is having a fine season at Celta so far, having found the net 9 times in 20 starts in the La Liga. Gomez has also provided 5 assists so far and at just 22 years of age, he has a massive future ahead of him in the coming years.
Touted to be the next Luis Suarez, Gomez’s powerful and physical displays are similar to his countryman and is one of the reasons that Barcelona are interested in the forward. The 22-year-old is a fierce competitor who uses his physique to great advantage in aerial duels and while holding up the ball.
Gomez’s runs behind the defenders and his skills to outfox them in the penalty area before firing a shot on goal makes him extremely dangerous and will thrive in the Premier League.
His combination with former Liverpool forward Iago Aspas has been impressive this season with the duo having contributed to 19 goals and 7 assists so far this season.
Gomez’s sharpness and understanding of the game is one of his biggest assets and will suit Mauricio Pochettino’s dynamic approach towards the English game. He can either play alone up front in place of Harry Kane, or alongside the Tottenham star.
Gomez’s market value has been on the rise and the Uruguayan won’t be cheap, especially with two other teams in the hunt for his signature. Gomez’s attacking prowess will massively improve under Pochettino and game time in the Premier League will take his game to the next level.
