Southampton vs Manchester United Predictions: Southampton line-up

Despite losing to Arsenal last weekend, Southampton have managed to bounce back quite successfully with a 2-0 win over relegation threatened Fulham.

But that won’t be enough at the moment for the club and they’ll have to win more than half of their remaining games to have a chance of staying in the Premier League.

While Ralph Hasenhuttl has managed to inject hope into the side, they have a tough run of fixtures, starting with Manchester United in the first week of March.

The Red Devils walk into the game on the back of a convincing 3-1 win over Crystal Palace despite going into the game without ten first-team players. However, that didn’t seem to bother Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the manager let Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Fred prove their worth.

The Saints need atleast a point from the weekend clash, especially given the fact that they play Tottenham, Brighton and Liverpool over the next few weeks.

Team News

Mario Lemina and Danny Ings are both ruled out of the clash, with them both currently nursing long-term injuries. While the former Liverpool forward might make it back next week, Lemina has yet to return to first-team training.

Meanwhile, youngster, Michael Obafemi had to be replaced against Arsenal last week after suffering a hamstring injury. The 18-year-old was only 20 minutes into his comeback and has now been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Probable Southampton XI

Formation: 5-3-2

Manager: Ralph Hasenhuttl

Angus Gunn (GK)

The former Manchester City starlet isn’t the first choice but he has been in fine form recently, making key saves against Fulham and Arsenal to keep the score to the bare minimum.

Jannik Vestergaard (RCB)

Easily Southampton’s best player this season, the former Borussia Monchengladbach star has been a key cog under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Jan Bednarek (CB)

The 22-year-old become a key man under Hasenhuttl since the turn of the year, playing in all the games since then.

Jack Stephens (LCB)

Given that he made way for Maya Yoshida’s return during the mid-week game against Fulham, the centre-back should make his return.

Yan Valery (RWB)

A revelation since his call-up from the U23s, the youngster should keep his place in Hasenhuttl’s team sheet despite the fact that they play Manchester United.

Oriol Romeu (RCM)

Southampton’s defensive enforcer, the former Barcelona star has played 21 games this season and even opened his account against Fulham during the mid-week fixture.

Stuart Armstrong (CM)

The 26-year-old started the season well, but he’s fallen into a rut and needs a boost to regain his confidence. However, his pace and agility will come into use against Manchester United.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (LCM)

The 23-year-old has been entrusted with the captain’s armband under Ralph Hasenhuttl and has done it justice, improving his performances over the last few months.

Matt Targett (LWB)

Another player to find his footing under Ralph Hasenhuttl, the 23-year-old has missed only three games since the Austrian’s arrival and should make his return after being rested for the midweek fixture.

Nathan Redmond (SS)

The 24-year-old has found a new lease of life under the Austrian boss and has played every game so far this season.

Charlie Austin (ST)

With no Danny Ings, Austin has been Hasenhuttl’s main man and should continue doing so until the English striker returns.

Tom Landry once said "Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
