Southampton were unfortunate to come out with nothing at St. Mary’s against Liverpool, as they had the Reds on the back foot for most of the game.
One observation that can be drawn from their season so far is that Mario Lemina was not in the matchday squads for both game weeks with the Gabonese international being transfer listed for Premier League clubs earlier in the window.
With the European transfer window coming to a close in the coming weeks, it’s best if Southampton offload him to another club.
Lemina hasn’t necessarily been bad during his time at Southampton but this has more to do with the vision that Ralph Hassenhuttl has for the club and the midfielder seems surplus to requirements.
Lemina’s best attributes are his ability to dribble out of pressure and help transition the ball from the defence to the attack. Although he isn’t a ball-winner as such, he’s quite tenacious and doesn’t shirk from defensive responsibility.
However, the midfielder is not a very good passer, lacks creativity and isn’t really a goal threat. Clearly, Hassenhuttl doesn’t fancy him in his high energy style. Lemina has also always been quite inconsistent throughout his career and has had issues with his temperament.
It’s been quite clear since Hassenhuttl’s arrival that Southampton don’t require his services and he should definitely be moved on in the coming days.
