Southampton haven’t had the best of starts to the season. Their performances have been admirable but they’re quickly looking at a battle to survive this season. They have a very promising manager in Ralph Hassenhuttl but they need to allow him to get his stamp on the side.
One player who has been pushed out is goalkeeper Fraser Forster and the big Englishman left the Saints before deadline day. Snapped up by Scottish champions Celtic, it is interesting to note that Forster has played for the Hoops before.
Current manager Neil Lennon was the one who got him to the club many years ago before selling him to Southampton and it should be a happy reunion.
Southampton have two solid options in Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn, with Gunn being first-choice now and Forster surplus to requirements. Hassenhuttl does like his goalkeepers to be good with their feet and Forster is definitely not someone who’s very good at that.
Forster, however, is an excellent shot-stopper, is great in the six-yard box because he has a massive frame which allows him to dominate that area of the pitch and make himself big to stop goals.
His one weakness was the fact that he wasn’t the most mobile, meaning he would often need to readjust his position even before he was ready to make a save. This would not be a problem in Scotland as he’s likely to be part of a very dominant team.
Southampton are now playing a high-pressing system which will require a mobile keeper – someone who can sweep and help in the build-up while also being good at distribution to initiating quick attacks. These aren’t Forster’s strengths and he hasn’t been getting game time recently either.

They need to break their duck this week and getting some points on the board can give them a lift for the rest of the season.
