Southampton Opinion: Why Jean-Kevin Augustin would be perfect for Southampton

The Daily Mail has revealed that Southampton have re-entered the race for RB Leipzig star Jean-Kevin Augustin. The 21-year-old has struggled to make an impact this season but still remains among the best prospects in world football.

For Southampton and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, however, the Frenchman is someone who can score a lot of goals. The Saints need another striker, with former Liverpool star Danny Ings being the most prolific among their front-men this season.

Both Charlie Austin and Shane Long have struggled to find the net consistently, with the Irishman recently breaking a 279-day goal drought. This has affected the club and they are in relegation battle.

While they have scored 30 goals so far, Ings is their top scorer with 7 goals, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg a distant second with three.

This was among the many reasons why former manager Mark Hughes was sacked and while Hasenhuttl has changed things, a small transfer budget (Daily Echo) prevented him from signing players in the January window.

The former PSG star has played in only 15 Bundesliga appearances this season, scoring three goals in the process.

This is a massive step down from last season, with the 21-year-old finishing with 37 appearances in all competitions. Moreover, he scored 12 goals and created a further six in what was his debut season for the club.

A lot like Danny Ings, Augustin possesses incredible speed and agility, using it to terrorize opposition time after time. His time at PSG proved to be more than useful with the 21-year-old improving his finishing and honing his attacking instincts.

For Southampton, a major positive will be the relationship between Hasenhuttl and the forward as the Frenchman grew leaps and bounds during the Austrian’s time at the club.

While Hasenhuttl did eventually leave and join Southampton, Jean-Kevin Augustin opted to stay at the club.

That said, Timo Werner’s presence up front has prevented Augustin from getting a chance to make the first team spot his.

Regular starts and first-team monopoly is something Southampton can give him but the fact that Everton and West Ham (h/t Daily Mail) are also in the race could prove to be problematic.
