Signing former Arsenal midfielder Ozyakup would be a coup for Newcastle – agreed?

As per reports in Turkey, Newcastle United are believed to be keen on a move for Besiktas midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup, whose contract is set to expire this summer. The former Arsenal star has not agreed to sign a contract extension with Super Lig giants, meaning Rafa Benitez could actually land him for free once the transfer window commences. It is understood that they are trying to get him to agree to a deal beforehand.

A central midfielder by trade, Ozyakup came through the ranks at Arsenal’s academy and although he did get a few chances to feature for the first-team, the player failed to make a strong impact and was eventually shipped out to Besiktas. However, he has proven to be quite a crucial player for the Turkish club since then and given his wide array of skills, Ozyakup could prove to be a coup for Newcastle.

The 25-year-old’s biggest strength lies in his knowledge and understanding of the game. For example, he has played as a defensive midfielder and as an attacking midfielder this season and on both occasions, he did exactly what was required of him.

Known for his sublime dribbling skills, Ozyakup’s game looks simple on the field but the repercussions of his move are highly effective. In addition to that, the player is also quite intelligent when it comes to leading the play. That said, the player thrives in the role of a box-to-box midfielder.

Benitez could most certainly utilise a player like him. For a good majority of this season, Newcastle have struggled to get things going. Despite making a strong start, the Magpies have fallen quite far behind and that can mainly be chalked up to a serious lack of power in the midfield area. To that end, an influential player like Ozyakup can work wonders at dictating terms in the middle of the park for Newcastle.

Currently, the Magpies do have Jonjo Shelvey and there is no doubt that he is a talented player. However, his work-rate is questionable and Ozyakup can fit the mould that way. He is relentless, energetic and can easily last 90 minutes with absolutely no problems. Furthermore, signing Ozyakup will show intent from Newcastle while also helping in boosting their squad depth.

Hence, this is a move that could significantly improve Newcastle’s overall performances and Benitez must do everything he can to ensure Ozyakup arrives at St. James’ Park this summer.
