Why Signing Dwight Gayle Would Be A Great Coup For Middlesbrough

Championship side Middlesbrough could make an audacious bid for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, according to the Sun newspaper.

The potential move surrounds the club’s pursuit of Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga who appears to be their first choice. Should they fail to land the Forest hit man, then they may be willing to offer a similar amount for Gayle, thought to be around £15million.

Premier League outfit Burnley are thought to also be interested in Assombalonga and could potentially have the cash to outbid Boro after their sale of Michael Keane to Everton. Garry Monk is refusing to give in on his striker search and sees someone at this level as being crucial to a title bid.

Newcastle’s number nine managed 23 goals in the Championship last season and is only getting better. His figures are all the more impressive considering the numerous injuries he had, causing him to spend time on the sidelines  and it’s thought that Rafa does not want him to start as first choice in the Premier League.

Garry Monk could test the waters with a bid for former Palace star Gayle who arrived on Tyneside only a year ago.

Both Assombalonga and Gayle have proven goal scoring records in this division, both would cost more than the initial £10million Boro wanted to spend on Assombalonga and both have injury records that may make fans urge caution to their club scouts.

Both are undoubtedly quality though and in Gayle, it would be highly irregular for a player who has become a fan favourite at St James’ Park to be spirited away to Middlesbrough so soon after getting his place in the Toon side.  That said, if it’s ever going to happen, then when the two clubs have swapped leagues is the time, and this transfer doesn’t seem too mad an idea – IF Newcastle can bring in a top striker.

Tammy Abraham was perhaps not quite seen as that, but Sandro Ramirez was and he has now joined Everton’s summer revolution and given the prices quoted these days, it’s hard to know who Rafa will go for.

Although it’s a very simplistic way to put it; Arsenal have basically just paid £52million for the player who can’t get into the France team because of the player Arsenal already have!  Buying strikers is an expensive game and I can see Newcastle starting the season with Gayle up front once again. If he is available though, he’ll be the best striker Boro can sign in many a season.
