Bournemouth forward Joshua King has been turning heads in recent weeks with some fine performances in the Premier League. His displays seem to have caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur supporters, who took Twitter to plead the club to sign him in the summer after his latest display, where he scored against Sunderland to lead the Cherries to a 1-0 lead, condemning the Black Cats to relegation.
The former Manchester United academy graduate has hit a golden patch in recent weeks and has been single-handedly carrying Eddie Howe’s men across the line.
So, should Tottenham pay heed to the wishes of their fans and make a move for King in the upcoming transfer window, here are three reasons why they can consider the fans’ opinion:
King has scored 15 goals for the Cherries from 34 league games this season and has taken over the mantle of being the chief goal-scorer in the absence of Callum Wilson.
The 25-year old is proving to be a lethal striker this season and is finally starting to flourish after showing years of promise. Having left Manchester United without making a single appearance for the senior team, it has taken a while for the Norwegian attacker to gain attention. But under Eddie Howe, he has come into his own this season and has managed to pull Bournemouth away from the threat of relegation with his goals. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that King has been the best player for the Cherries this season.
He has the pace, the intelligence, and the killer instincts to be a threat to the opposition as he has shown this term. He could prove to be the ideal backup for Kane at Tottenham.
Tottenham have had a great season so far and are 2nd in the Premier League with still an outside chance of beating leaders Chelsea to the league title.
However, one area of concern for the Lilywhites is the lack of a proper backup option to leading striker Harry Kane. The English marksman has been brilliant for Mauricio Pochettino’s side once again, but his understudy Vincent Janssen has struggled to deliver. Having arrived in the summer, the Dutchman has managed just 2 goals in the English top-flight from 24 appearances this season which isn’t ideal for Spurs.
Bringing in someone like King in the summer would provide Janssen with a little more time and breathing space to find his bearings, while also relieving some amount of pressure off Harry Kane.
Another aspect that works in his favour is his added versatility. King can play up front all by himself, or operate as an auxiliary striker as well; like he has done with Benik Afobe in recent weeks. He can play on the wings and in a No.10 role as well, which would provide Pochettino with great amount of flexibility in the attack.
With Tottenham set to feature in the Champions League once again next season, having the 25-year old will allow them to mix things up and surprise teams on the European stages, while also allowing them to rotate their squad suitably in domestic competitions when needed. At 25, King is entering his best years and will not cost a lot of money as well, thus making him a great prospect.
