Enough is enough: It’s time for Arsenal to be ruthless and offload their £5m liability this summer

Arsenal Opinion – Should the Gunners sell Mohamed Elneny?

According to the Sun, Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is set to leave the club and join French side Bordeaux in a cut-price transfer that will force the Egyptian to take a wage cut.

Elneny struggled for regular game time last season under Unai Emery and only managed five Premier League starts. He was put on sale earlier this year and now has been approached by Bordeaux for a possible move (h/t Sun).

The 26-year-old, who arrived at the Emirates stadium from Basel for a fee of around £5m in 2016 (h/t BBC), has failed to impress in England so far.

He was offered to fellow Premier League sides Fulham and Crystal Palace last summer, but his £55,000-per-week wage became a stumbling block. (h/t Sun)

Here’s why it is good for both parties that they part ways, with the player moving to a different league:

Elneny could get regular play time and Arsenal offload a deadwood

Even though Mohamed Elneny’s contract with Arsenal runs until the summer of 2022, it is not ideal for the Egypt international to stay at the club beyond this summer.

With only 17 appearances in all competitions last season, and most of them coming in cup games, the 26-year-old is quite evidently not in the first-team plans of manager Unai Emery.

So if Arsenal sell him this summer, even if it is on a cut-price transfer, they can get some money to add to their funds to buy some new players ahead of the start of next season.

From Elneny’s viewpoint, it is crystal clear that he hasn’t made the cut in Premier League football. The best move for him is to play in a different league, where he can play regularly and take his game to another level. Hence, moving to Bordeaux makes a lot of sense.

Conclusion

Arsenal and Mohamed Elneny parting ways is good for both parties. The Gunners have to take the bold step of revamping their squad ahead of a crucial season.
