Liverpool opinion: The Reds should sign Sardar Azmoun and here is why

According to the Metro, Liverpool have scouted Zenit St Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun, with the report claiming the Reds were in attendance during Saturday’s Russian Cup final, where Azmoun scored a brace.

In fact, the Reds were very much impressed with the Iranian’s recent form as they eye for a possible move. Earlier in 2017, Azmoun turned out to be a priority for the Reds before they decided to cool their interest in the end. (h/t Metro)

Azmoun – an underrated attacker

Despite stepping down from national duty at this tender age, Azmoun hasn’t ceased to impress people at the club level and has been consistent so far.

Following the dismal world cup campaign last year, the 24-year-old made a switch to Russian outfit Petersburg, where he was off to a flying start.

He was able to rack up 17 goals and 7 assists, and ended up as the league’s top scorer with 12 goals, alongside Fedor Cahlov from CSKA Moscow.

Elsewhere, Azmoun has also had a similar sort of success with the clubs he played before this, including Rubin Kazan and Rostov. His magnificent goal in the 3-2 win against Bayern Munich who were then managed by Carlo Ancelotti, in the Champions League, will be remembered for a long time.

Besides being Iran’s top scorer with 28 goals, Azmoun has also registered 54 goals and 23 assists at club level so far in his career.

Why should the Reds move for Azmoun?

Indubitably, the Reds’ attacking trio, which comprises of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, is one of the fiercest attacking line-ups in the world right now.

However, Firmino was out with injuries during the 2018/19 campaign, which saw him miss crucial games. And it further reflected on his scoring index as there was a significant decline in the goalscoring ratio when compared with the previous season.

With that being said, Azmoun could be a brilliant back-up to the Brazilian and can even win his chances by impressing Jurgen Klopp.

Known for his dribbling skills and for being adept at playing short and incisive passes, Azmoun is also good at Ariel duels and precise finishing techniques.

He also holds a great counter-attacking threat with his agile feet and the ability to breach through the pockets of spaces, a unique trait that is always welcomed by German manager Klopp.

Azmoun can play as a centre-forward alongside Mane and Salah in a winger -heavy 4-3-3 formation or can also play as one of the inside-forwards in a 4-4-2 formation.

Verdict

The Reds can opt for players like Azmoun, who carries huge potential and comes with a reasonable price tag. Yet, it remains to be seen whether the Iranian international would be able to adapt to the temperament of the Premier League.
