Sheffield United opinion: The Blades should sign Britt Assombalonga

According to a report from Teesside Live, Premier League newcomers Sheffield United are interested in signing Middlesbrough forward Britt Assombalonga.

Britt Assombalonga, 26, was Middlesbrough’s top-scorer last season and the club are understood to be keen to keep hold of the striker, with new manager Jonathan Woodgate likely to want to try and get the best out of the former Nottingham Forest striker.

But Boro may not be able to turn down an offer if it did match their valuation of their number nine.

Since arriving at Middlesbrough in 2017, Assombalonga has scored 30 goals in 92 appearances, an impressive record considering the Teessiders’ goal-shy efforts in recent seasons. With that in mind, Sheffield United must go all out to sign the DR Congo international this summer.

The Blades are preparing for life in the Premier League after winning promotion last season.

It remains to be seen as to what progress the club are making in the transfer market but the Bramall Lane faithful will be hoping that they can sign as many players as possible so that the players can join the side for pre-season.

Assombalonga really impressed in the Championship in a defensive system employed by former manager Tony Pulis at Middlesbrough. He’d fit in perfectly at Sheffield United, who are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements.

The likes of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick need support and competition following the exits of Connor Washington, Leon Clarke and Gary Madine.

That’s exactly where Assombalonga could be a handy signing for the Blades. The DR Congo international is powerful and strong enough to shield the ball, whilst he also has the pace, trickery and movement to terrorise the opposition defence.

He has a stocky frame with which he can shrug off the defenders and either run or make a quick pass to his teammate.

The 26-year-old isn’t afraid to shoot from distance and that combined with his creativity and speed in the final third has made him a menace. Furthermore, Assombalonga works really hard off the ball and that should make him a good fit in Wilder’s system at Bramall Lane.

Verdict

Sheffield United may have reservations about shattering their transfer record for a player who has never played Premier League football before. But they must take a gamble on Assombalonga, who could just be the man to improve Wilder’s hopes of survival next season.
