Match Report: Manchester City 5-0 Liverpool

As the two Premier League giants faced off at the Etihad, plenty was expected by the fans of both the clubs. Coming in fresh after the international break, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp approached the game with a full a strong XI apart from the exception of Dejan Lovren who was benched in favour of Ragnar Klavan.

The Reds made a bright start to the game, with both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane giving the City back line a tough time using their pace and trickery. Salah, in particular, was looking threatening on the counter as he took a couple shots at goal, only to find Ederson.

Soon, City started to gain some momentum, with Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne forcing Mignolet into a couple of saves within the first 15 minutes of the game. Fernandinho took some initiative and fired a long range strike from 30 yards but Mignolet was sharp enough to tip it away.

Trent Alexander Arnold then saw yellow for a foul on Kevin De Bruyne at the edge of his own box. But the Belgian failed to capitalise on it as the Reds cleared the ball away from danger.

Salah was once again looking threatening as he burst down the right. But his ambitious cross went to the City goalkeeper. Around the 24th minute of the game, Liverpool were made to pay for their poor end product as De Bruyne set up Sergio Aguero for the first goal of the game. With that strike, Aguero became Premier League’s all time leading non-European goal scorer.

The Reds didn’t wait for too long as Sadio Mane was brought down at the edge of the box by Fernandhino, who saw a yellow for his tackle on the Liverpool winger. However, Emre Can failed to make anything of the set piece as his shot went well wide of the goal. The Reds really missed Philippe Coutinho in such situations.

In the 37th minute of the game, Liverpool were dealt a big blow, as Sadio Mane was shown a red card by referee Jonathan Moss for his raised foot on City goalkeeper Ederson, who had to be taken off the pitch as he took a boot right on his face.

As the Reds went down to 10 men, Man City did not take too long to capitalise, as Gabriel Jesus doubled his side’s lead with a header from De Bruyne’s brilliant cross. Half-time saw Jurgen Klopp bring in summer recruit Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in for Salah but Guardiola’s men were just too good for the Reds to stop them, as Gabriel Jesus scored his second and City’s third. With that goal, City killed any chance of a Liverpool comeback.

Guardiola took off the Brazilian striker for Leroy Sane around the 60-minute mark, which was soon followed by Klopp replacing Georginio Wijnaldum by bringing in James Milner, followed by Dominic Solanke for Firmino, close to the 70-minute mark. But within 10 minutes of coming on, Sane fired home the fourth goal of the game, thanks to a brilliant cross from Benjamin Mendy from the right.

In the final few minutes of the game, a frustrated Emre Can got booked for his tackle on Sergio Aguero as Man City inflicted more pain upon Klopp’s men with Sane scoring a long ranger past a demoralised Simon Mignolet.

The fans erupted on Twitter and here are some of the best tweets we came across:
