Match Report: Real Madrid 1-1 Levante

Real Madrid continued their awful start to the league season with a 1-1 draw against newly promoted Levante at the Santiago Bernabeu. Having been held to a 2-2 draw against Valencia in their previous league outing, it must be said that manager Zinedine Zidane went into this match with plenty of confidence, with a lot of heavy experimentation involved in the starting line-up that included both Theo Hernandez and Marcelo.

The visitors caught the reigning champions off on a sluggish start as Ivi spun past Dani Carvajal before slotting home on the 12th minute mark. Benzema had to be substituted early in the match due to injury related issues and ‘The Welsh Wizard’ Gareth Bale was brought on by manager Zidane.

Things started looking better from there on, with Bale providing a lot of attacking intent and also pressing his opponents well. Spanish forward Ivi came close to doubling the lead from a free kick but it was Real Madrid who levelled the match through Vazquez after a Ramos header was parried away by the keeper.

Raul Fernandez soon earned redemption by denying Bale an easy opportunity at the stroke of half time, with an impressive one-on-one save after the Welsh forward broke through on goal. Bale cut an especially frustrated figure in the match as he missed atleast three clear cut chances to drive his team into the lead.

Levante’s resolute defence proved to be too tough an ask for Real Madrid. Levante’s inspired goalkeeper, Raul Fernandez helped his team immensely. His best save came in the 89th minute when he saved a low-struck effort from Marcelo. The Brazil international then rolled to the floor in frustration and flailed at Levante’s Jefferson Lerma, earning himself a stupid red card in the process.

Real Madrid missed Cristiano Ronaldo and Modric’s presence in this match and have some things to sort out before going into their next game. With five points so far from 3 league games, Madrid will look to start picking up points from next game on.

The fans were obviously vocal on Twitter and here’s how they reacted on Twitter:
