Scouting For Mourinho: Top 3 Clinical Strikers Who Will Boost Chelsea’s Title Chances

Share

Chelsea’s strikers have failed to live up to the expectations, prompting manager Jose Mourinho to look at possible options in the transfer market. Here’s a look at three strikers the Blues might consider, in a bid to bolster their options up front.

3. Jackson Martinez (Porto)

According to Sports Direct News, FC Porto’s Colombian striker Jackson Martinez  is at the top of Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s January transfer window wish-list after watching his current crop of strikers – record signing Fernando Torres, summer arrival Samuel Eto’o and former Newcastle hit man Demba Ba fail to be prolific in front of goal. The trio have scored just five Premier League goals between them, Mourinho is aware that a lack of a cutting edge up front could them the title.

The Colombian has scored 49 goals in 64 appearances since arriving at Porto, and the club’s failure to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League could be a great chance for Chelsea to swoop in to sign the prolific forward. 27 year old Martinez himself is interested in a move to Chelsea, and given his ability to find the back of the net on a consistent basis, it may be wise for Chelsea to fork out the money necessary (he has a huge £34m buy-out clause)to bring him to West London.

2. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Chelsea are interested in Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and have been given hope in his pursuit after it emerged that he is yet to sign a contract extension at the club where he has spent close to 10 years since joining from boyhood club Everton.

Rooney’s current contract has only 18 months to run, but Rooney is understood to be reluctant to commit his future to the Red Devils given their lowly league position and the very likely chance that they will miss out on Champions League qualification. Rooney has been in splendid form this season, having scored 11 goals and created 55 chances in the Premier League and the Champions League. His addition could make Chelsea the well-oiled machine that would leave the fans purring with delight, given his ability to not only score goals but create them as well.

1. Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid)

Diego Costa

According to Mirror, Athletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is a target for Chelsea with an eye for a possible summer transfer. Jose Mourinho has hinted that he may not make any striking additions in January, and while that may be unlikely, if it meant that it would result in the summer arrival of Costa, it would certainly make sense.

While Costa himself would be unlikely to be open to a move six months ahead of the World Cup, there is the possibility of a deal being done in advance to bring him to Stamford Bridge in the summer. Costa has just obtained Spanish citizenship, and will be keen to impress Spanish national team coach Vicente Del Bosque, having already netted 19 goals in 19 league appearances along with 4 goals in 3 appearances in the Champions League.

Chelsea will have the inside track given the fact that Costa’s agent Jorge Mendes is also the agent of Jose Mourinho.
