Scouting For Jose – 2 Key Areas That Needs To Be Upgraded At Manchester United This Summer

Two Positions That Manchester United Need To Strengthen In The Summer

Jose Mourinho will be pleased with the way his team backed up the Europa League win with a comfortable victory over the Clarets at the Turf Moor in the league this past weekend. They are now in a decent position to qualify for the Champions League next season and Mourinho would be planning for life next season. He has been believed to be looking at some star players to add to his squad at the end of the season to help his side face the upcoming challenges. This has seen some of the best players in Europe get linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer. But what is required at Manchester United? Here are a couple of positions that Mourinho should surely address in the summer:

Defensive Midfield

A particular position that Mourinho has to target and improve on is his midfield areas – Defensive midfield to be precise. Michael Carrick has done an excellent job whenever he has been called upon but he might not be at the club next season and United need an immediate replacement. Marouane Fellaini has been decent in this position but he cannot be the first choice in Europe for the club next season, thus sending Mourinho into the transfer market. Ander Herrera has done a good job alongside Paul Pogba but they need a played playing in the deeper role to be more effective. They have shown the same when they played alongside Carrick in a midfield three and Mourinho needs to find a player who can work on similar grounds. Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco, Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur and Franck Kessie from Atalanta are all options in this position for the club this summer.

Full-backs

Jose Mourinho often likes his teams to be compact at both ends of the field and this means that the full-backs are usually responsible for adding width to the attack. This season, Mourinho has juggled between the likes of Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia in the two positions on either wing. Rojo, Shaw and Valencia may remain at the club but it is hard to see Mourinho go into the next season with the same bunch of players. Valencia has been good but playing him in all four competitions might be a risk. On the other hand, Luke Shaw does not seem ready for a European journey. Manchester United need star players in these positions to be effective next season and Mourinho seems to be looking at the likes of Sead Kolasinac, Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker all of who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford and Mourinho will have to spend on one of them to help Manchester United compete with the best next season.
