Scouting For Guardiola – 3 Super Goalkeeper Options Manchester City Should Look To Sign This Summer

Share

It’s always very difficult to try and earn a starting spot as a goalkeeper whenever you go, as this one is probably the most crucial position in the field while also being one of the most durable positions, as goalkeeper tend to retire on their forties unlike most of other players.

Being a substitute keeper can be a complete nightmare, as you’re going to need a miracle in order to actually have some playing time besides National Cups and games with lower profiles, so it can be something very frustrating.

This situation gets even worse if you were used to have a starring role elsewhere and now you’re sent to the bottom of the bench, either because of your age, injuries or due to the surge of an outstanding talent of the arrival of a new boss.

That’s exactly what’s happening with Manchester City’s Willy Caballero, as the 35-year-old Argentinian arrived at the Etihad Stadium as one of Manuel Pellegrini’s favourite guys from his Malaga tenure, but he never had the chance to actually become a starter due to Joe Hart’s presence and Claudio Bravo’s arrival.

So, the veteran keeper is reportedly heading to the exit door this summer, so naturally, the citizens are going to need a substitute goalkeeper to face the upcoming season, and we’re going to take a look at 3 possible choices Pep should consider to bring to the Etihad.

Pepe Reina

Reina is one of the most charismatic veterans you’ll find anywhere, and even if he’s become Napoli’s starting goalkeeper, the 34-year-old could easily be lured into a move to play under his compatriot’s command, especially considering that he could take a lot of pressure off his shoulders to face the last years of his successful career.

Of course, Reina’s past as a Liverpool icon could make this move a tricky one, but it would make a lot of sense considering that the experienced keeper already knows how to succeed in this league.

Mattia Perin

Genoa’s starting goalkeeper has been one of the most impressive prospects since he was a teenager, and the 24-year-old is set for a big future ahead of him, being often compared with other Italian legends like Francesco Toldo and Gianluigi Buffon.

Perin could be City’s keeper for the future when they’re done with the Claudio Bravo experiment, as the Chilean veteran isn’t getting any quicker nor younger, and he has struggled to adapt to the Premier League, so Perin could be a huge backup and step up whenever they need him to.

Kasper Schmeichel

The 30-year-old was reportedly a target for Liverpool a few weeks back, but Ranieri denied all the rumours regarding the same, but as this certainly is not a secret that he has a great chance of winning a silverware at the Etihad rather than Leicester, a nice and lucrative move to the Etihad Stadium could definitely tempt the veteran keeper.

Nevertheless, it’s obvious that he wouldn’t start over Claudio Bravo, so he’d have to decide between having regular playing time or winning titles, but he could be a nice addition to the Citizens while taking some pressure off his shoulders with less responsibility.
