Scout Report: Davy Klaasen

Bargains are one of the toughest things in this day and age of football; the only teams that do get away with bargains are the mid-table to lower-table clubs who take a risk with their signings. That is why they often try to snap up deals for youngsters in hopes of getting someone on the cheap and them developing into better players. Paul Pogba might have been one that got away, but there are more positives than negatives from signing these young players, all you need is a good scouting system. Here in this article, we will be scouting one such bargain player.

Arsenal and Manchester United seem to be locked in on one of Holland’s rising talents in Davy Klaasen. The 22-year-old attacking midfield from Ajax has been on the scout reports for various clubs and we look at what the player has to offer if he were to join Wenger of Van Gaal.

The new Bergkamp?

Well, he has been hailed as the new ‘Dennis Bergkamp’ for quite a while and most Arsenal fans would know just how good Dennis was during his time at Arsenal. The youngster started his career with the local side HVV de Zebra. He remained at the club till 2003 and joined HSV Wasmeer, and it was after another year that he was picked into the famed Ajax youth team and from there he went from strength to strength.

He made his debut for the Ajax first team in 2013 and his performances have grown ever since, he was recently named as the captain for this season and it would be a major blow to Ajax if Klaasen does leave the club now.

His preferred role is that of a central attacking midfielder though he can play higher up the pitch and support the main striker. He has a great passing ability as almost every attack that comes out from Ajax is through the young midfielder, he is that important to the club. Klaasen also has great control of the ball and has the vision to pick out players and start attacks really quickly.

Klaasen also has great positional awareness and is often looking for pockets of space in the final third to provide an outlet for his teammates to find him. He has a lot of attacking flair and can run with the ball as well. There is one downside to him, he isn’t the most physical player out there and can be brushed off the ball quite easily.

If he were to join a passing team like Arsenal, Davy could have a great future under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger. The question remains if Arsenal are willing to pay big money for a 22-year-old and are Ajax willing to lose one of their brightest stars so early in his career?
