Arsenal have been linked to a host of players in the summer and it is very much expected that they would bring in some of them. Without further delay, Wenger needs to sign a striker as Giroud has not been adequate for them this season. Although it was his first season and to his defence, he has scored a decent amount of goals and got into the assist sheets as well, Arsenal need someone who can come in and create an impact from the word go.
While a lot of strikers ranging from Higuain and Rooney have been linked to them, it is also reported that Aleksandar Mitrovic of FC Partizan Belgrade and Yaya Sanogo of Auxerre have already signed for the Gunners. Well nothing is confirmed as of now, and the striker hunt continues.
Th two likely transfers that could happen (or at-least the fans want it to happen) at the Emirates this season are either Christian Benteke of Aston Villa or Stevan Jovetic of Seria A side Fiorentina. So let us take a look at both the striker’s statistics that they have notched up throughout this season.
While Benteke plays as the lone target man for Villa, Jovetic operates from more of a second striker role for his club. Judging by this, it is not a surprise that Benteke leads Jovetic with 19 goals to 11 this season. Benteke has been in tremendous form this season and it cannot be expected that every season he would produce the same results but still he would prove to be a tremendous threat for the opposition if he moves to a bigger club.
Their overall contribution to their teams have been more or less the same judgying by their performance scores from the above image.
Have a look at their passing accuracy, as it is an important aspect of a striker who plays for Arsenal.
We can see Jovetic’s overall impact on the game if we take into consideration the pass accuracy of both the players. While Jovetic has a 78% passing accuracy, Benteke trails at 65%, proving the point. Out of nearly 1100 passes attempted, Jovetic has converted as much as 837 out of which 52% are forward passes, now that’s something worthy to note. A typical ball playing striker who can combine with the likes of Cazorla and Wilshere, sounds more like the Arsenal we know.
Both the players do not show much tendency to drop back and help in the defence. But that doesn’t really matter, does it?
In respect of age, they do not provide much option to choose from with Benteke being 22 and Jovetic just a year older.
As both these players would cost around £25m, Wenger must decide on whom to make part of his plans. If he decides to switch back to 4-4-2, a second striker in the form of Jovetic would prove to be a perfect signing. But if he decides to operate with a lone striker, whoever he buys will have to get it going from the word go and for that Benteke is the man as he is already a Premier League proven material and more adapted to the English conditions.
