How Safe are Chelsea and Jose Mourinho at the Moment?

Share

Another game, another draw but this time around at least the manager was happy with the performance, an away draw against Dynamo Kiev isn’t the worst result in the world and with two home games out of the three remaining games in the Champions League, Chelsea do have a great chance of making it from the group.

Jose Mourinho

They might sit third in the table currently but looking at the Premier League table it doesn’t give a really great picture of the problems that have plagued Chelsea this season. The latest player to feel the manager’s brunt has been Eden Hazard, who has been dropped for a few games in place of Willian, who according to the manager, gives the team more in defence and that is something that the Blues have required this season.

Sacrificing Hazard might harm their attacking output but it does help in their defence and Mourinho has always been known for his defensive look at the game and going back to basics would be a good thing for a Chelsea team that hasn’t been anywhere close to the team that was the best in the country last season.

All good at Chelsea?

Eva Carneiro

Jose Mourinho has had a number of run-ins this season, first it was the Eva Carneiro issue, then it was a number of rants against the referee, he still makes jibes at Arsene Wenger and after this game, he had a bit of a go at the referee, who missed a penalty claim from the Chelsea team.

Mourinho compared that mistake to the one which led to Scotland losing to Australia in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals but even if we isolate this incident, things just don’t seem to be right at the London club. The 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League just put paper over the massive cracks at Chelsea; there have been issues of player selection with Mourinho continuously playing with Ivanovic, despite the Chelsea right-back having one of his worst seasons. Then dropping John Terry and not being able to fix the issue of the midfield which was always run over by their opponents.

The problem with their strikers hasn’t helped Chelsea either, while Falcao and Remy were never going to be starters in many games, Diego Costa recently stated that he was overweight and had to lose a few pounds to get back into shape. Mourinho has even blamed a late preseason tour which has hurt the preparations of the team, as they looked extremely tired at the start of the season.

Radamel Falcao

Chelsea are ten points behind the leaders Manchester City, that might be too much of a gap to makeup and Chelsea probably will not be able to retain the title. Jose Mourinho has a lot on his hands and winning the title might be in the back of his mind, he has more pressing concerns and making Chelsea play better football and eking out results should be his top priority, he was known to take out 1-0’s at Chelsea, it should be time for him to think about doing the same.
