Regular Starter Or A Bench Warmer? Is This 22-year Old Scott Right In Rejecting A Deal From Rangers?

Is Barrie McKay Right In Rejecting A New Deal From Rangers?

Rangers star Barrie McKay has put question marks over his future at the Ibrox, as he has declined a new contract offer from the club, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The report claims that the 22-year old was in for a pay rise and a further two-year extension on his current deal, which expires at the end of the next season. The Gers have reportedly come back with a new offer for the winger, but it remains to be seen if the player is willing to consider the offer or is looking for an exit from the club.

But, in case if he is hoping for an exit, is he right in rejecting the offer at this point of time in his career? Is he making a mistake by doing so?

The answer is a definite yes.

McKay has been with the club since 2011 and has impressed for the youth sides previously. He really burst onto the first-team scenes last year with some impressive performances for the Gers in the second tier of Scottish football. The 22-year old winger scored 9 goals and set up 13 strikes for his teammates from 48 appearances across all competitions in the 2015/16 season.

This season, however, he has failed to reach similar heights for the Glasgow club, much like the rest of his team. McKay has chipped in with just 4 goals from 41 games in all competitions combined. He last scored for the Gers back in March against St.Johnstone but has gone without a goal since then. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if a bigger team approaches him for his services.

McKay was the subject of interest from German Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig in the summer, but no progress has been made on that front and it seems like the interest has cooled down now.

On his day, the 22-year old wide man has the ability to turn a game on its head, but the Rangers fans have been treated to such displays on very few occasions this season. While there are many clubs willing to sign him up in the summer, it is hard to imagine if that would be a step up for him at this point in time, where he is a certain starter for Rangers, week in week out.

At 22, he is young and has shown great potential. And at this stage of his career, he would be best served by staying at the Ibrox and continuing his development with a team where he is playing regularly, rather than moving to a bigger side and be a bench warmer over there. So signing the new deal that the club is offering him should be the right decision to make.
