Rangers Opinion: Why should the Gers sign Helander?

According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers are closing in on signing Bologna defender Filip Helander, as Steven Gerrard eyes his eighth signing for the Light Blues this summer.

The report also states that the transfer fee is worth £4.2million. (h/t The Scottish Sun)

The 26-year-old joined the Serie A outfit in 2016 and has been a consistent performer since then.

A youth product for his country-based club Malmo, Helander represented its main team for 4 seasons, during which he won the league title twice.

He also had a spell in the Serie A with Verona and has 10 international caps for Sweden’s senior team until now. The Swedish centre-back garnered wider attention when he won the U21 Championship with Sweden.

The Swedish international played a key role behind Bologna’s 10 clean sheets the last term, which was the 9th highest in the league.

Leading the defence from the back, Helander was one of the major reasons for Bologna’s decent run over the past two seasons.

Rangers in need of defensive reinforcements

The Light Blues are currently in the transfer window for defensive reinforcements, as they need to bolster their high line of defence ahead of next season.

At Ibrox, the Gers are deprived of centre-back options as they have only a handful of players like Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson. To make matters worse, Joe Worrall has returned to his parent club and Ross McCrorie was recently loaned to Portsmouth.

Given the present scenario, the Light Blues can get the services of Helander, who could be the new leader in their defence.

Even in the highly competitive Serie A last season, the Swedish star held a pass success percentage of around 80 and won an average of 2.6 aerial battles per game.

He also often gets physical in the play, as he averaged 2.1 tackles and 3.7 clearances per game.

Final verdict

The Gers can make themselves a contender for the Scottish Premiership title should they get the services of a high-profile defender like Helander
