Rangers going all out for this 6ft 2in French giant could very well sort out attacking future

Why Rangers should complete a move for French striker Serhou Guirassy

According to French newspaper Courrier Picard (h/t The Scotsman), Rangers have been credited with an interest in Serhou Guirassy, who currently plies his trade with Amiens in Ligue 1.

The 23-year-old target man is also on the radar of Spanish outfit Espanyol (Courrier Picard h/t Scotsman) while a report from Leicestershire Live back in October revealed that Premier League high-flyers Leicester City are also keeping tabs on the powerful centre-forward.

Born in Arles, France, to parents of Guinean descent, Guirassy completed his footballing education at Stade Lavallois and shot to prominence in Ligue 2, where a tally of 6 goals in 33 league appearances earned him a move to the French top-flight with LOSC Lille in the summer of 2015.

However, he struggled for game time at Lille during the first half of the 2015-16 campaign and returned on loan to the second-tier in Auxerre, where he reinvigorated his reputation with 8 goals in 16 games during the latter stages of the season.

That paved the way for a switch to the German Bundesliga with FC Koln in the summer of 2016 but Guirassy’s stint at Koln proved to be an injury-stricken one, with the club also suffering relegation to the second-tier.

The 23-year-old former French U-20 international managed a meagre tally of just 9 goals in 45 games before returning to his homeland on loan with Amiens back in January 2019.

Guirassy, who scored 3 goals in 13 appearances in Ligue 1 during the second half of the previous campaign, was snapped up on a permanent deal by Amines this past summer for a fee of £5.4million

The former Lavallois star has made a promising start to the ongoing campaign at his new club, scoring 4 times and assisting once in 13 appearances.

Meanwhile, Rangers were going toe-to-toe with arch-rivals Celtic atop the Scottish Premiership standings before losing valuable ground in the title race following a 2-2 draw away at Aberdeen on Wednesday night.

To put things into perspective, Serhou Guirassy might not boast of the most prolific record but he looks like a handy option for Rangers moving forward.

The 23-year-old has carved out a big reputation for himself in his homeland as a powerful target man and the Gers have now set their sights on bringing him to Ibrox in a bid to bolster their attack.

Alfredo Morelos has been quite unstoppable this season but with the Colombian attracting widespread interest from several Premier League clubs (h/t Birmingham Live), Rangers might be forced to part ways with their star man if one of the potential suitors put up an offer on the table that they simply can’t refuse.

Jermain Defoe, who is currently on loan from Bournemouth, has proven himself capable of racking up goals for fun at this level despite his advancing years but at 37, he can’t really be deemed as a long-term solution for the Ibrox giants.

With Kyle Lafferty no longer in the scene at Ibrox, Rangers might need to scour the market for alternatives in the near future should Morelos depart for a bigger club, and Guirassy looks like a decent option in the right age bracket.

The 23-year-old hasn’t really lived up to his potential just yet but his powerful 6ft 2in frame means that he could well add another dimension to Rangers’ attack.

As per whoscored, the Frenchman averages a staggering 4.5 aerial duels per game in Ligue 1 this term, figures which lie testament to his credentials as a bonafide target man.

Verdict

Guirassy is only going to get better with time, and considering the fact that the Scottish Premiership is way behind the French top-flight, both in terms of quality and intensity, a move to Rangers might go a long way towards helping him rack up more goals.

Ideally, though, Rangers would be better off keeping tabs on the player for the time being and make a move for him next summer, given that it would make it easier for the Frenchman to get to grips with Gerrard’s philosophy and settle down better at Ibrox following a full pre-season.

All in all, Rangers’ interest in Serhou Guirassy certainly strikes the right chords and he could well be the next big thing at Ibrox.
