Two goals in four minutes just before half-time helped West Brom beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park in the Birmingham derby. Hal Robson-Kanu opened the scoring in the 41st minute, while Jay Rodriguez doubled the lead four minutes later to provide a commanding base for the Baggies to hold onto their lead for the rest of the game.
The home side struggled for creation of chances and were second best throughout the game. Their best chance came in the first half when Andre Green square pass found Tammy Abraham unmarked in the box. But the loanee from Chelsea took a poor first touch to allow the West Brom keeper to dash off the line and smoothen the situation.
However, Darren Moore’s men were more clinical in the final third and had more shots on target. Jacob Murphy, who had an impressive game, forced the Villa keeper to make a couple of smart saves.
Four minutes from the break, a fantastic Mason Holgate cross dovetailed with the run made by Robson-Kanu and the Welshman made no mistake to head the ball into the back of the net. Right at the stroke of half-time, Rodriguez doubled the lead with a low shot from outside the box to beat Lovre Kalinic, who had to be substituted.
As for West Brom, they are now fourth in the table with 57 points, four behind second-placed Sheffield United, having played a game less. A great afternoon for Moore and his men.
