The rigorous Christmas period of the Premier League is upon us and with it brought us many exciting games and interesting results. Chelsea maintained their unbeaten run with a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace while Manchester United managed to defeat West Brom 2-0 at the Hawthorns.
Arsenal faced their second defeat of the week, losing 2-1 to Manchester City at the Etihad whereas Liverpool left it late to clinch a 1-0 win in the Merseyside derby. Elsewhere, there were also wins for Middlesbrough, West Ham, Southampton, Tottenham and Sunderland.
Following another week of eventful on-field action, let’s take a look who makes it to our Team of The Week for Gameweek 17:
When clean sheets and victories are a rarity at the Stadium of Light, Pickford stepped it up on the evening against Watford as Sunderland won the game 1-0. The youngster has been showing fine form this season.
Another accomplished performance by the Spaniard against Crystal Palace in the heart of the defence. Kept a clean sheet and set Diego Costa up with a perfect cross for the only goal of the game.
Gibson continued his exceptional progress this season with another dominating display at the back against Swansea City. His long ball started the move for Middlesbrough’s brilliant third goal. Held on to the clean sheet as well.
Bossed the Baggies throughout the evening. Physical, aggressive and intelligent, the Argentine had Salomon Rondon in his pockets for the entire game. Continues to flourish in the absence of Bailly and Smalling.
Consistently dealt with the threat from the Burnley right-flank and was a threat himself going forward. The England full-back scored the winner for Spurs to get them closer to Arsenal in the fourth place in the league table. Man of the match performance from Rose.
The Wales International had a very good game against current champions Leicester City as he made two key passes on the evening and also got on the scoresheet for Stoke City at the Bet365 stadium.
The Belgian’s creativity and spark was the primary threat for Arsenal on Sunday. Made many dangerous crosses and had a few opportunities to score for himself. Set up Raheem Sterling for the winner with as sublime a pass as you’ll ever see.
Came on from the bench at half-time and turned the game around. Sent a lovely dinked ball for Jay Rodriguez to score the second goal. A strong display from the Northern Ireland international.
The Spaniard scored a second double in four games, the first a fine goal, and followed it up with a rabona in the win over Swansea. His renewed confidence is showing on the field.
Scored a brilliant brace for the Saints against Bournemouth in the south-coast derby. Got the second goal for Southampton with a poke from close before scoring from a fantastic effort to seal the three points for his team.
A dominant display by the giant Swede against West Brom as he finished the game with two goals for United. Took his tally for the season to 11 strikes in the league.
