Manchester United suffered a demoralizing 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven on their return to the Champions League after an absence of one year. United’s night got even worse after it was confirmed that left-back Luke Shaw had indeed suffered a double fracture after he was carried off the field on a stretcher. Memphis Depay gave United the lead in the 41st minute, soon Moreno equalized in the stoppage time. Luciano Narsingh got what proved to be the winner shortly before the hour mark.
David De Gea- 6
Can’t be blamed for either of the two PSV goals, didn’t have anything much to do apart from the picking the ball out of his own net twice. Looks a much more assured figure after securing a new deal with United last week.
Matteo Darmian- 4
His worst game in a United shirt this season, couldn’t effect the play too much going forward, while being exposed on a number of occasions defensively. Couldn’t contain Lestienne on the right flank, guilty in the build up to PSV’s equalizer.
Chris Smalling- 6
Smalling was given the armband in the absence of Wayne Rooney. Was solid throughout the 90 minutes, drove the ball out of United’s half on a number of occasions. On one particular instance he nearly scored. His mix-up with Darmian led to PSV’s corner, which they scored from later.
Daley Blind- 5
Switched from centre-back to left-back after the horrific injury to Luke Shaw. Didn’t look comfortable for the whole of the evening, unfortunately, deflected Moreno’s header into the back of his own net. Booed by the home fans due to his past connections with Ajax.
Luke Shaw- 6
Started strongly and in the 15 minutes that he was on the pitch for, he made some superb runs forward but what a shame that he had to be stretched off after what appeared to be a broken leg following a lengthy stoppage.
Handed a deeper-lying midfield role but not at all effective there. Needs to be pushed forward if Van Gaal wants to unlock his true potential. He had a very quiet game and was hauled off with 15 minutes to go.
Bastian Schweinsteiger- 4
Sometimes his passing slows down the game, which gives the opponent a chance to regroup. For a player of his experience, one expects him to boss these type of nights in Champions League but, unfortunately he seems to be aging faster than what LVG expected.
Ashley Young- 5
Did well in patches but most of his crosses into the box failed to find anyone. Had a better second half after switching wings but was unable to trouble PSV’s defense too much. Substituted late in the game for Antonio Valencia.
Juan Mata- 5
Had the chance to level the scores in the second half, when was put through by a fine ball from Schweinsteiger. Made too many wrong decisions when in good positions and should have had a shot but was strangely reluctant to pull the trigger.
Memphis Depay- 6.5
Marked his return to his former club with a brilliant goal, dancing between two defenders before slotting home. Though he did fade away as the match went on, still the brightest spark in an otherwise ordinary United side.
Anthony Martial- 6
Given his first start for United after his heroics against Liverpool, linked up well on a number of occasions with Depay but couldn’t effect the game a lot. Didn’t shy away from physical battles against PSV’s defenders.
