Manchester United vs Leicester City- 3 talking points

The 2018/19 Premier League season kicked off on Friday with Manchester United beating Leicester City 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Manchester United, thanks to an early penalty from Paul Pogba and a late strikee from Luke Shaw, scraped a 2-1 win over an impressive Foxes unit to get their campaign up and running.

Pogba, captaining the side after just returning to Manchester on Monday, scored an emphatic penalty just 3 minutes into the game, following a Daniel Amartey handball to fire United into the lead. Shaw’s strike was his first career competitive goal, catching out Ricardo Pereira before slamming the ball past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Substitute Jamie Vardy squeezed the ball home for a consolation in stoppage time, but it proved to be too little, too late.

Here are the three talking points from the Manchester United vs Leicester City game

Perfect start for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho

There are very few ways to dissolve the negativity surrounding the club than a goal after three minutes and a win to start your season. Thanks to a Daniel Amartey handball, Pogba stepped up to take the resultant penalty and scored to give United the best possible start.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of the defender.

Luke Shaw put in a brilliant display at left-back and got into the act, scoring his first senior goal in the second half.

After a summer of discontent, grumbling and frustration, Mourinho’s United are off to a winning start in the 2018/19 campaign.

Paul Pogba delivers

It was a big surprise to see Paul Pogba start the game after just returning to Manchester from his World Cup holidays. And it was an even bigger astonishment to see Pogba captain the team.

The Frenchman took his chance to show that his best performances are not limited to Russia. He repaid Mourinho’s faith.

Just 3 minutes into the new Premier League season, Pogba showed no signs of nerves while taking the spot-kick and scoring from it. He looks confident, determined and seems like a man on a mission this season.

Luke Shaw is the real standout

Now, that performance against Leicester City was arguably Luke Shaw’s best in a United shirt since joining the club as a teenager.

Shaw has been vocal about his ambition to become the first name on the United team sheet this season and his display against the Foxes proved that the man is not just about words but that he is determined to impress.

There was plenty of energy shown by Shaw, who never left a chance to make overlapping runs on the left. He also remained defensively diligent. In the end, it was his persistence and perseverance that paid off.
