Perfect for Bielsa – This promising Everton outcast would be an outstanding signing for Leeds United

Why Leeds United should sign Mason Holgate from Everton

According to a report in Birmingham Live, Championship league leaders Leeds United are considering a move for Everton youngster Mason Holgate. They could make a loan move for the defender who is versatile enough to play as a centre-back or as a fullback.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men already have Izzy Brown and Lewis Baker on loan from Chelsea but neither of them has played any significant part this season. The Peacocks are slightly short of defensive options and need a cover for the second part of this campaign.

Here’s why they should get Holgate on board to perform that duty and enhance their chances of winning the title this year:

Holgate can fight for his place in the team

After the arrival of Marco Silva in the summer, Holgate hasn’t been able to break into the first-team at Everton. He has made only five league appearances so far and none since the end of September. It is clear that the new manager is banking on arrivals, Kurt Zouma and Yerry Mina, to partner Michael Keane in central defence, leaving Holgate with very little chance to make a comeback into the team.

As a result of that, the development of this young talent would be halted. Hence, it would be best from the Toffees’ viewpoint that they let this 22-year-old prodigy go out on loan for short-term.

A loan deal will help the player get some minutes on the pitch in the competitive games and regain the confidence to come back in the summer and fight for a spot at Goodison Park.

Leeds United, on the other hand, are short on defensive options as mentioned above. Captain Liam Cooper is injured, meaning they have just one senior centre-back in their squad – Pontus Jansson. Aapo Halme is still a teenager and hasn’t played much. Hence, Marcelo Bielsa has been forced to play midfielder Kalvin Phillips alongside Jansson in central defence.

Hence, it is clear that the Peacocks could do with a defensive backup or an extra option in the window. Holgate is a quality player who possesses the talent and confidence to play in such a tough position and come out with flying colours.

He can partner Jansson in central defence and also be an able back-up for Luke Ayling at right-back if required. All in all, the 22-year-old could be a pivotal addition to the squad for the second part of this season. If Leeds are ambitious to win the league, which they are, Holgate must arrive at Elland Road next month.
