Rangers need to buy or loan player in order to help bridge the gap between themselves and Celtic. It is quite so obvious and it can clearly be seen. The league table suggests that and there’s no denying it.
The relative success of last season, when Rangers regularly fielded young players, has been partly mirrored since the departure of Mark Warburton this year with younger players being given a chance in the last few games. So with top foreign talent off the agenda, the question is – which homegrown young players could Rangers bring in to improve their title chances next season?
Here are two names which would help make the Old Firm a more competitive battle.
The talented left-sided player is in his 5th year at Hearts now and is improving very steadily. One of the better goal scoring midfielders already in the Scottish Premiership, one can’t help but feel that he could improve again at Ibrox if given the chance.
Having represented Scotland at the under-15 level right up to the under-21’s, it seems a bit harsh that he has not had a full international call-up yet. Perhaps playing on a slightly bigger stage in Old Firm games might be the push he needs to come to the national set-up’s attention and there’s no doubt he would make an excellent signing.
12 goals so far this season is a great return and more can be expected next term.
Born in Leeds but representing Scotland at under-18, under-19 and now at the under-21 level, there’s no doubt at all that the Swansea starlet is an excellent striker in the making.
He’s had to spread himself rather thin for his 23 appearances this season; 13 games for Swansea’s U23 side in the league have yielded 10 goals and 4 more appearances in the EFL Trophy have brought a further 5 goals. His 1 game for the full side in the EFL Cup produced another 2 goals. That’s quite a record. The fact he was awarded his Premier League debut and has gone on to play 5 times in total in the top flight means it is unlikely he will want to move north of the border permanently. However, a loan move may just perfect.
Temporary moves for young stars may still be the way to go for the big two for the foreseeable future – this one would be a very ambitious signing for Rangers indeed.
