Aston Villa’s faultless start to the season ended when they drew 1-1 at Portman Road against 10-man Ipswich Town. Steve Bruce’s men played the whole of the second half with an advantage but couldn’t find a winner.
Villa took the lead when John McGinn delivered a devilish cross for Jonathan Kodjia to head the ball home. The striker then almost scored another, when he hit the cross-bar after getting assisted by Jack Grealish.
An Orjan Nyland error allowed a long throw to drop into the box for Trevor Chalobah to stab home from close quarters. Since then, the home side got down to ten men but Villa failed to capitalize on that supremacy.
Here’s how Bruce’s men rated against Ipswich Town:
Did not make one comfortable save and gifted Ipswich an equalizer. A tough start to his career at Aston Villa.
Was strong and powerful in his position defensively. Should have made more forward runs to support the attack.
Chester was calm, measured and assured in his performance today. Won most aerial duels and made important clearances.
Was comfortable partnering Chester, winning aerial duels on both ends. The Aussie could have been more composed in possession to add positive points to his performance.
A solid display from the left-back and just like Tuanzebe, he should have shown greater attacking venture in the second half.
Began the game at right midfield and put in some good crosses into the box. However, he slotted in at right-back later in the game.
Was deployed deeper in the midfield and couldn’t impact the game as he would have liked.
Set up Kodjia for the opening goal and displayed a dogged performance in the midfield to get his side on the front foot.
Saw a lot of the ball throughout the game but couldn’t provide quality on the final ball.
Created several openings for Villa and always remained a threat on the ball.
Scored his first goal in eleven months with a glancing header to gift his team the lead. Ran the channels well to provide an outlet.
Tried to make things happen upon his introduction but cut a frustrated figure.
Was denied at the death and ran the midfield for the phase of the game. Impressive.
