Celtic kicked off the 2018/19 season in style with a 3-0 win over FC Alashkert in the first leg of their first round of UEFA Champions League qualifier on Tuesday night.
Odsonne Edouard handed the Hoops the lead in the first-half stoppage time with a right-footed strike from inside the box. The Scottish international doubled their advantage in the 81st minute before midfielder Callum McGregor added more gloss to the scoreline, making it 3-0 in the added time to all but confirm his side’s progress to the next round of the qualifiers.
Here’s how the Celtic stars fared on the night in what was an impressive display against the Armenian outfit.
Did not have a lot to do for large phases of the game but was alert when needed, making three crucial stops to deny the hosts a goal on the night.
A rough night for the Scotsman, as he took a boot to the face and was given a difficult time by the home team. Was caught off guard that almost led to a goal for Alashkert but was saved by Gordon’s awareness.
Another composed and confident display from the Norwegian youngster, who was given a tough test by the Armenians. Showed great confidence, striding out from the back with the ball at his feet.
Starting on the left of the back-three, the Bosnian did not look all that comfortable but managed to hold the fort and come away with a clean sheet. Involved in the build-up to the opener.
A typical James Forrest display out on the right flank, filled with plenty of running and industry, capped off with a deserved goal late in the game.
Came into the game without being 100% fit but made his mark with a usual authoritative and influential display in the middle of the park. Strong in tackles, smart in reading danger.
A bit of a mixed outing for the young Frenchman, who showed good work ethic in the middle but was also too casual with the ball at times.
A display filled with cute touches and smart turns, the Scotland international came close to scoring in the first period and got his name on the scoresheet late on. Impressive.
Showed great energy and intent down the left-hand side, running up and down the flank, hitting some dangerous crosses into the box.
Showed great instincts to score his first goal of the season, after having completed a permanent transfer this summer. His link-up play with his strike partner was on point and without a doubt, there’s plenty more to come from the Frenchman.
The Frenchman might not have scored but his overall display will have impressed manager Brendan Rodgers. Dembele looked in a much better shape than last season and his all-round game, movement, work-rate were all very impressive.
On for Ntcham with a little over 20 minutes left to be played. Solidified things in the middle.
Replaced Dembele in the 68th minute. Looked sharp and lively.
Made his official debut for the Hoops, replacing Edouard in the 77th minute. Helped set up the second goal and was a threat with his pace.
