Opinion: Why Manuel Pellegrini Would Be A Perfect Fit For Chelsea

The top news of the transfer window isn’t about a player moving from one club to another but it is about one manager taking over at Manchester City. Manuel Pellegrini is set to be replaced by Pep Guardiola at the end of this season and it ends a fairly successful reign for the Chilean at the club who won the Premier League and League cup with the Citizens.

The announcement came as a mark of respect for the 62-year-old Chilean and there would be no doubt that he would be willing to take up job offers and there are quite a few tasty ones in England itself. Manchester United and Chelsea are two clubs which need a new manager and Pellegrini could well take up one of these offers.

While Manchester United does seem a bit of a long shot, the Blue side of London wouldn’t be the worst side for Pellegrini to takeover and with the money to spend at Chelsea, it could well be a match made in footballing heaven.

A calm demeanour at the club

Manuel Pellegrini is the epitome of someone who oozes class and actually earns respect for the way he conducts himself. He is the complete opposite of Jose Mourinho who always made it about him at the club. Pellegrini though would always think of the team first and be out to protect his players, plus he wouldn’t pick up needless fights against almost anyone who is involved in the English game.

Pellegrini also has a history of managing clubs with big expectations, Real Madrid being the biggest one but he achieved great success with Villareal and Malaga as well, leading both clubs to the Champions League.

Pellegrini also has had to deal with large egos and with John Terry about to leave the club at the end of the season, it surely will be easier for the Chilean to get his message across to the rest of the team. He does have one problem that seems to stem from his calm demeanour, he might not seem as passionate as the other managers but winning the Premier League crown does put him in a different league as only a few managers have succeeded in winning this title.

This could be just the kind of manager Chelsea needs, someone who knows about the game, has been managing for a long time, is a stabilising figure and doesn’t pick up unnecessary fights with the media or other managers. He might not be the youngest head out there but certainly his experience should make him one of the leading choices for the job at Stamford Bridge.
