Opinion: Jose Mourinho’s negative behaviour means Man United’s season could implode in a matter of weeks

Why Mourinho’s negative behaviour means Manchester United’s season could implode very quickly

Manchester United’s rather subdued transfer window has left manager Jose Mourinho in a trepidious situation. His press conferences during the pre-season games have been nothing short of a rant aimed either at the players or the board.

After the pre-season game against Liverpool, he mentioned that he gave a list of five players to the board to improve the squad. However, from what United have done in the window thus far, it seems like the Portuguese has not had the final say.

From the above facts, there is a rationale why the manager still states a need for two new players, from which he will probably get one to make the squad better. And now the club is being linked with players for ridiculously high amounts, which further dampens the mood. Harry Maguire is a decent player but the price tag of £80m is just a bit too crazy.

Is ‘trust’ an issue?

There appears to be a difference of opinion between the board and the manager. Mourinho has been grumpy thus far, which is not something new. But he has made his demands pretty clear for the club’s hierarchy to consider.

However, the response from Ed Woodward and Co. hasn’t been great, which has added more negativity around the club.

This has affected the overall preparation of the team ahead of their most important season. The players as well might not trust Mourinho as much as they would like to, the simple reason being the manager turning the corner on his assets as well.

All big things are achieved when there is a parallel running amongst opinions of various hierarchies in a system. However, at Manchester United, the complete opposite has been the case so far, which can have a negative impact in the near future.

Is the manager to blame for this?

It’s true that a club like United should sign big players every summer to strengthen their squad. They have spent heavily in the past two transfer windows under Mourinho and have seen little progress in terms of their main target – which is to win the Premier League.

Hence, the manager is somewhat culpable of having spent a heavy sum and still not being able to get the best out of his players. He is also on the wrong side in terms of promoting youth, which is an integral part of the footballing society in Manchester.

Ed Woodward

It is distinctly understood that the board hired Mourinho in the first place under a state of panic. The Portuguese is simply the opposite of what United are as a club.

The attractive style of football under Sir Alex Ferguson is no where to be seen and a working youth system, which was there to promote players to the first-team, is looking like an independent work-house.

Verdict

The “third season curse” for Mourinho is here again. He seems to have lost his plot and his genuine relationship with the board. The negativity which is being spread around Old Trafford will only have a bad effect on the season ahead.

The stagnation may just mean the end of the Portuguese’s era at Manchester United before the end of this season.
