According to a report in Leicestershire Mercury, on-loan centre-back Filip Benkovic, who is playing for Celtic, has reaffirmed his intentions to return to Leicester City and fight for a starting place at the King Power Stadium.
The 21-year-old counts the Premier League as the next challenge for him to overcome, after impressing in the Scottish League for the Hoops. (Leicestershire Mercury)
The Croatian’s performances has been widely raved about by many around Leicester and Celtic, and the player hopes to repeat those levels next season for the Foxes. Although, he admits he has few works to work on to become a proper Premier League centre-back. (Leicestershire Mercury)
Benkovic is currently sidelined with an ankle injury and it is serious enough to keep him out until the end of next month.
Here’s why Leicester should keep hold of the 21-year-old from next season and use him in the first-team:
Leicester signed Benkovic last summer from Dinamo Zagreb, for a fee believed to be around £13m. He then moved on loan to Celtic, as they already had Jonny Evans, Caglar Soyuncu, Harry Maguire and Wes Morgan as the centre-back options.
However, the Foxes haven’t been solid at the back, Morgan is 35 now and probably wouldn’t be a regular from next season. Soyuncu has failed to really impress, leaving Evans and Maguire as the options.
Hence, it makes sense for them to have Benkovic back and blend him into the team. The Croat is determined to do well in the Premier League, as mentioned above, and he has done pretty well in the Scottish League to justify his claim in the Leicester back-line.
The 21-year-old is good in the air and reads the game well to intercept through balls towards the opposition striker. He does not shy away from making tackles and stopping the attacks.
His passing out from the back is not the strongest suit, but the more he plays in Leicester system, the better he will get.

Benkovic would be a welcome addition to the Leicester back-line. Claude Puel’s men can further improve in defence and look to better the performances of this season next time around.
