This is by far the worst start to a Premier League campaign by a defending Champion and Chelsea do not seem to be getting any better at the moment. Jose Mourinho might have nothing to say but many pundits and players have their opinions about what is going wrong at Chelsea. Stadium bans, fines and a lawsuit coming from an ex-employee? That is only the half of it, plus the fact that there is an actual revolt within the camp and players are not performing up to the high standards they had set last season.
All is not lost for the manager though he seems to be confident of staying at Chelsea and you certainly cannot find someone to replace Jose at the moment. The minimum that Roman would accept is a top four finish by Chelsea and we provide five reasons why they could still achieve this gargantuan task.
Jose Mourinho might not have ever faced such a situation in any of the clubs he has been at but the man knows Chelsea better than anyone else and is the most successful manager for the club. Mourinho might not be having the best of times, but he does have a habit of spinning almost every controversy and making it about himself, which he has done impressively this season as well. When it seems that the Heavens are transpiring against Jose every year, the Portuguese does manage to summon his inner energy and deal with all these problems.
2. A long season ahead
Chelsea still have 27 games left in the season, they probably won’t win all of them, but sooner or later they should go on a run. Granted the Premier League features tough competition on a weekly basis but Chelsea will have the firepower to deal with most teams, well at least we hope so. 27 games Jose has to get that elusive top four spot and him being 10 points behind Manchester United in the top spot, Jose could get it done; after all he did usurp Barcelona from the top of La Liga, even if it was with all his moaning and eye poking.
3. Players will come to form
Whether the players want to play for him or not, they have to pull up their socks. Chelsea’s manager is not leaving the club anytime soon and with the Euros coming up pretty soon, they have to pull their socks off and perform. We saw how a dejected David de Gea stayed at Manchester United and is now putting up world-class saves for the Red Devils. Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and a few more have to get their priorities right and them starting to perform could push Chelsea higher up the table.
4. Teams will slip up
Not many of the top teams have had a poor run of form, which will happen to them sooner or later. Catching Manchester City or Arsenal might be a difficult task but having Leicester in the top three certainly wouldn’t last long. Leicester might well continue their great run, but injuries and a long list of fixtures will hit them as well. Manchester United aren’t playing all that great either and if Chelsea, when Chelsea get on a run, they could well catch the other teams.
5. Win the UEFA Champions League (A tough Shortcut )
The reason Roman wants the team to finish fourth is to qualify for the Champions League; Chelsea can however, secure a place in the competition by winning either European trophy. Winners of the Europa League and the Champions League qualify for next season’s competition and if Mourinho can win that elusive European trophy with Chelsea, he could make this season a success.
