Norwich signing this 500-game veteran would certainly fix their defensive woes

Why Norwich City should make a move for Domagoj Vida in January

Back in June, Turkish newspaper Fanatik (h/t Eastern Daily Press) had claimed that Norwich City were interested in signing Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida. The Canaries made a €10m bid for the defender but it was rejected by the Turkish club (h/t Eastern Daily Press).

The report added that Wolves had submitted a higher bid and had Norwich returned with a better offer, Besiktas would have considered selling the 30-year-old. (h/t Eastern Daily Press)

Domagoj Vida started six of Croatia’s seven games at the World Cup as they reached the final in the summer of 2018. He joined Besiktas in January 2018 from Dynamo Kyiv and managed 18 appearances in his debut season. The Croatia international played 38 times across all competitions last season, scoring three goals.

The tough-tackling defender has hit the ground running this season and following his impressive performances for Besiktas, Norwich should renew their interest in Vida and table a better bid to sign him in January.

Norwich find themselves at the wrong end of the table following the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United. Had it not been for Tim Krul in goal, United would have won by a bigger margin last weekend.

Things don’t look rosy for the Canaries and Daniel Farke definitely needs reinforcements to avoid the drop at the first time of asking.

One of the most crucial areas Farke needs to fix is his defence, which has leaked 26 goals in just 11 games. In fact, they have a very bad defensive record in the division and unless it changes, there is a strong chance of Farke’s side going down.

Farke has a number of options at centre-back but barring Ben Godfrey, the likes of Christoph Zimmermann, Timm Klose and Grant Hanley are all long-term casualties, while Tettey hasn’t impressed.

Thus, it would make sense for the Norfolk club to sign an experienced and quality centre-back in January. And Vida could definitely be that player for the Canaries.

Vida would add top-level experience, having been involved in numerous high-profile tournaments like the Champions League and the Europa League. With almost 500 games in his career, the 30-year-old is a very experienced player.

Verdict

The Croat is contracted to Besiktas until 2022 but if the move goes through, it would certainly be a timely deal to improve their condition.
