Roma’s Allesandro Florenzi has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, according to a report from Italian news outlet CalcioMercato. The 28-year-old has been seen as a potential replacement for Kieran Trippier at right-back and right wing-back.
A replacement will be a necessity with Serge Aurier being the potential starter but the Ivorian is often a defensive liability, which is why a replacement will be necessary.
Young Kyle Walker-Peters has impressed when he’s been given a chance but is not anywhere close to starting for Spurs on a regular basis with Champions League and Premier League titles within reach.
Mauricio Pochetinno has built a reputation for nurturing young players and Walker-Peters doesn’t have to worry about getting an opportunity but it’ll be ideal if he deputises for a more senior player.
Florenzi doesn’t have a lot of years left in his prime and Walker-Peters should be ready to take over by then. Other England internationals like Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Harry Winks and Eric Dier are a testament to that.
Florenzi is a very technically gifted full-back, who can also play as a midfielder. His best attributes are his stamina to bomb up and down the pitch, his speed and acceleration.
He would be a change from Kieran Trippier, who liked providing crosses from wide and lot more similar to what Kyle Walker offered.
Tottenham don’t have too many natural wingers and they only have the likes Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura, and depend on their full-backs and wing-backs to provide the width by hitting the byline.
Florenzi would be providing some much-needed width that’ll be lacking and would help Pochettino to retain his high line due to his recovery speed. Florenzi is also a far better immersive presence than the likes of Trippier, who wasn’t the most defensively attentive player.
Roma are going through a change themselves with the hiring of manager, Paulo Fonseca and will be hoping that they can fund the rebuild with the sale of older players like Florenzi.

Mauricio Pochettino will believe that he can come close to winning silverware again after coming ever so close last season.
It was his first final as manager and will look at the likes of Liverpool for inspiration, who also failed at a similar hurdle but plugged a few gaps to win the Champions League. They’re on the right track with the capture of Tanguy Ndombele and following that with Florenzi’s capture.
