No Real Attacking Threat: 4 Key Notes From Manchester United 1-1 Leicester City

4 Key Notes From Manchester United 1-1 Leicester City

Manchester United and Leicester City played out a 1-1 draw which didn’t actually help either side in their quests. Manchester United needed a win to inch closer into the top 4 while Leicester needed three points to win the Premier League crown.

Martial

United took the lead thanks to Anthony Martial and dominated for the first 15 minutes before Wes Morgan equalised from a header for the league leaders. We look back at the game and list out the four talking points.

  1. Kasper Schmeichel saves Leicester

The Danish goalkeeper would have wanted to win the league title in the stadium which his father dominated for years. That did not happen but the younger Schmeichel did emulate his father by doing extremely well between the sticks as he constantly kept Manchester United out.

One great save from Jesse Lingard in the first half kept the score to just 1-0 for Manchester United and the goalkeeper was always quick on his feet as he ensured that any loose balls from the back were dispatched without United actually going much to trouble his defence.

2. Danny Drinkwater sending off

First it was Jamie Vardy and now it is Danny Drinkwater, it just is not going right for Leicester as they lost another influential player to a needless red card. Drinkwater was already on a yellow for a pull-back and he did the exact same thing in the second half giving the referee no choice but to send him off.

Leicester were actually lucky that the official did not give a penalty to Manchester United but with Drinkwater missing out in the game against Everton, will this play a crucial role in the Premier League title race? Leicester fans will hope not while Tottenham fans will pray that it does.

3. Fellaini and Huth’s tango

It shouldn’t be a surprise that these two were involved in a tussle but both players should have been warned for their shenanigans. Fellaini was having his hair pulled by Huth but the Belgian ended up elbowing the Leicester centre-back.

Louis van Gaal defended Fellaini’s response by saying it was a “natural reaction” but certainly both should have been more mature. They are professional footballers and watching them tangle for no reason didn’t help either team and both Fellaini and Huth should face retrospective action if the referee or his assistants did not see the incident.

4. No real attacking threat from United

Apart from the first `15 minutes, there was not enough of an attacking threat from Manchester United. The side might have had 70% possession but they did not have enough shots on target to take the game to Leicester.

Everyone knows how Manchester United and Leicester City play and the home side should have tried to take advantage of the lack of Jamie Vardy which greatly cut out Leicester’s pace in the game. United could not even take advantage of an extra man when Drinkwater was sent off and well this point is not enough for the Foxes to win the league but it isn’t enough for United either to get into the Champions League either.
