Next Messi? Is Pochettino Right In Comparing This Tottenham Youngster With The 5 Times Ballon d’Or Winner?

Share

Since his boss Mauricio Pochettino compared him to the biggest star of our generation, Lionel Messi, every eye of the media and the fans has been upon Marcus Edwards, Tottenham Hotspur’s new sensation teenager.

The 17-year-old from England is going by the ‘Mini Messi’ nickname due to his great skills and qualities that made Pochettino compare him to his compatriot, stating that his body and game style really reminded him of a young Lionel Messi.

Marcus joined the minor teams of Tottenham a couple of years ago, netting seven goals in his first season with the u-18 Spurs squad, which granted him a spot in the reserves squad of the Yiddish, where he has scored three goals along with a couple of assists in just 5 games this season.

Those outstanding performances were enough for the youngster to get his professional debut for the Spurs against small side Gillingham in the past round of the EFL cup, coming off the bench to play the last 15 minutes of the match.

Even if he didn’t have the much of a chance to show his skills, there’s a lot of hype surrounding the youngster that can play both as a winger and a second striker , just like Lio Messi does.

Besides, his dribbling skills, change of pace and low center of gravity really make everybody think that those comparisons with the Argentinian may not be as crazy as you’d think when you hear this kind of stuff.

Marcus Edwards seems actually ready to contribute to the first team right away. However, he has a lot of competition ahead of him with Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min; all healthy and playing at a great level and this situation could be even worse when Harry Kane returns from his ankle injury.

However, let’s not go ahead of ourselves, as the youngster is just 17 years old and Pochettino seems to be enjoying his progress at a lower level and patience often pays off for this guy, who has an incredible eye for great prospects as he shown during his tenure with the Saints a couple of seasons ago.

Marcus Edwards is one of the biggest jewels of England right now along with the other Spurs’ youngsters  like Cameron Carter – Vickers and if you add young guys like Dele Alli and Vincent Janssen, you have a pretty decent core for the future with one of the best managers in the world right now.

Nevertheless, thes kinds of comparisons often seem to frustrate the future of some great prospects, and fans tend to expect more from than these kids can give them right away, so it’s better to wait and see how things turn out.

However, there’s no denying in several similarities between the style of the two, and if he can manage to stay healthy, he could have a great future in an era of tiny speedy guys like Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho, so let’s hope everything goes his way.
